What do Mazie Hirono, Bruno Mars and this reporter have in common? We all were once students at Koko Head Elementary School. And as a former Cobra, it is my pleasure to announce that this year the Hawaii Kai school celebrates 55 years of educating future movers and shakers from East Oahu - along with a Blue Ribbon nomination for its high test scores and academic excellence.

In honor of these achievements, the Friends of Koko Head Elementary is throwing a “Party on the Lawn” from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday on the Lunalilo Home Road campus.

Festivities include live entertainment, a silent auction and a Hawaiian luau menu of poi, lomi lomi salmon, kalua pig and haupia. In addition, there will be a photo display of the faces of all those who once attended the school.

The party also serves as a way to reconnect with old friends, like former principal Cecilia Lum. Many attribute the school’s success to the leadership and guidance of Lum, or Ms. Lum as she is affectionately known on the Koko Head campus. Lum retired July 1 after 30 years, leaving the school in the hands of Loretta Yee, former principal of nearby Kamiloiki Elementary.

Alumni, teachers, parents and everyone with ties to the school since it opened in 1954 are invited to attend. Tickets cost $15 per person, children under 5 get in for free. Proceeds go to P.E., music, art and other enrichment programs through the Friends, a nonprofit whose main objective is to partner between the home and school.

Tickets are available at the school office or by calling 397-5811.
