Jarrett’s Got All-Star Help

Del.icio.usA portion of a $50,000 grant to After-School All-Stars Hawaii from the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation is assisting at-risk students at Jarrett Middle School in Palolo.
The nonprofit ASAS works to provide free, quality comprehensive after-school programs to keep children safe and help them succeed in school and in life.
“Our vision is to provide these students with opportunities to participate in educational, sports, cultural and community enrichment programs; to build confidence and self-esteem, encouraging youths to say ‘no’ to drugs and violence, and ‘yes’ to hope, learning and life,” said ASAS Hawaii chapter executive director Dawn Dunbar.
Currently there are more than 100 students enrolled in its program at Jarrett, and any student with a parent or guardian’s permission can join. “For this age group it is incredibly important for students to have a place to go after school, and be exposed to these positive programs before high school,” said Megan Grimshaw, the school’s ASAS coordinator. “It is extremely valuable for a child’s growth.”
Programs are open from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on all school days, starting with an hour of fun, educational activities in history, math and science. The second hour is for homework, bringing teachers in to assist students. The third hour is time for fun, such as Frisbee, basketball, football, ukulele lessons, dance, show choir, art, cooking, literature, philosophy and more.
ASAS, which was founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1990, serves 70,000 youths ages 12 to 15 yearly through free after-school and summer programs throughout the country.
