Independence Day Fund Awards Scholarships To Falcons

Del.icio.usThree Kalani High seniors have each won a $2,000 scholarship from the Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Foundation.
Charna Underwood, Michelle Ige and Emily Valenzuela were chosen from 13 Kalani and Kaiser applicants for demonstrating high academic ability and future promise. They also submitted essays on what community means to them. Scholarship chairman Andy Kikuta said one requirement this year is that they attend a Hawaii college.
“We may change that in future years,” he said, noting that all three winners plan to attend UH Manoa this fall.
“We are so pleased to be able to present three scholarships for the first time,” added Melanie Long, president of the Foundation which sponsors the Independence Day fireworks at the East Oahu bay.
Underwood plans to major in math and science with a goal of pursuing a career in education; Valenzuela hopes to become a civil engineer; and Ige plans to major in education with an emphasis on English and/or science.
IDMBF’s mission is to provide scholarships to East Oahu students, and the funds come from the July 4 celebration where 75 percent of net proceeds are reserved for the scholarship fund. Cove Development also donated $1,000, and Hawaii American Water and Hawaii Kai Community Church each donated $500 to scholarships.
