The Pacific Roller Derby’s All-Stars Travel Team is about to experience a truly white winter. The team, which often practices at the Kamiloiki Community Park rink, will be in Alaska Dec. 10-11, skating against the Fairbanks Rollergirls and Anchorage’s Rage City.
The All-Stars are the best of Pacific Roller Derby’s three teams made up of more than 50 female skaters who are mostly in their 20s and 30s.
“Although it is technically the league’s off season, our All-Stars are still committed to practicing as much as possible so we can be a cohesive team on the track,” said media chairwoman Sylvia Flores (aka Tadbit Nasty), of the Alaska preparations. “We have been doing both on- and off-skates conditioning and a variety of skill and agility drills, blocking and hitting drills, and we hold regular scrimmages.”
Flores said the team has seen a lot of mainland action, but this upcoming game will “definitely be the coldest.”
A scrimmage Saturday at Barbers Point will help fund the Alaska trip. “Battle for the North Pole: Good vs. Grinch” is at the Hideaway Club at the Coast Guard Air Station. Admission is $5, and all ages are welcome. Non-military must RSVP online by today (Dec. 1) at pacificrollerderby.com for base entry. Buying snacks there also supports the cause. New, unwrapped toys for the league’s Toys for Tots drive also are welcome.
