Below are highlights of what’s happening in the East Oahu community in the next few weeks.

* The Honolulu Newcomers Club holds its monthly luncheon April 20. For location and details, call 944-3310.

* The U.S. Small Business Administration presents a “Business Loan Blitz” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 20 at Hawaii Kai Library. Loan applications will be accepted, and staff will assist. Call 541-2983.

* Hanauma Bay Education Center theater hosts a free lecture by Alan Friedlander at 6:30 p.m. April 20 on “Life on the edge: how animals survive in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.” The April 27 lecture by Carl Meyer is on sharks in the same region. Call 397-5840.


* Kaiser High presents Jesus Christ Superstar at 7:30 p.m. April 20, 21, 28 and 29 in the drama room. Tickets are $7 and $5. Call 394-1219.

* The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs holds a Financial Literacy Education Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 at Kahala Mall. Call 586-2622.

* Volunteers are needed for the Hanauma Bay area cleanup from 8:30 to 11 a.m.April 22, Earth Day. Just show up at the park’s upper picnic area, or call 395-1217.

* The Chevron-Honolulu District Elementary School Speech Festival is from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 22 at McKinley High School, with all East Oahu schools participating. Call 373-3546.

* Project Visitation trains volunteers for work with foster children from 9 a.m. to noon April 22 at Chaminade University. Participants help foster-care siblings maintain family ties by bringing them together for monthly visits. Call 528-7050.


* Area blood drives are set for April 25 at St. Louis School, May 1 in the Kaimuki Municipal Parking lot, May 9 at Kaimuki High, May 14 at Hawaii Kai Towne Center, May 15 at Sacred Hearts Academy and May 21 at Kahala Mall. Call 845-9966.

* Kona Brewing Co. Pub in Koko Marina Center has live music from 6 to 8 p.m. April 23 by Round and Round, and April 30 by Ledward Kaapana. Call 394-5662.

* Magician Kelvin Chun entertains at 10 a.m. April 29 at Hawaii Kai Library. Call 397-5833.

* Bibelot Gallery features Inside Out, an exhibit of new oils by Sanit Khewhok, now through May 5 at 1130 Koko Head Ave., Suite 2. Call 738-0368.

* Wesley United Methodist Church hosts a Chamber Music concert at 7:30 p.m. May 6 in Kahala, featuring violinists Sasha Margolis, Emma Philips and Anna Womack, and cellist Mark Votapek performing Mozart’s Divertimento and Schumann’s String Quartet No. 3. Tickets are $15 and $10. Call 394-0788.

* Star of the Sea seeks volunteers, sponsors and donors for the East Honolulu Food Festival, set for 5 to 9 p.m. May 6 on campus. For details or to offer help, call Ayumi Yamane at 722-1145.

* The state Board of Education will meet at 6:30 p.m. May 11 in the Aina Haina Elementary School cafeteria for “an open exchange of ideas” with the community. Topics include standards-based reform, assessment and accountability, and restructuring. Call 586-3349.
