Below are highlights of what’s happening in the East Oahu community in the next few weeks.

* Hanauma Bay Education Center presents a free film at 6:30 p.m. July 6 in the park theater: the PBS documentary “Window to the Sea,” featuring America’s leading aquariums. (397-5840).

* The Hawaii Blood Bank conducts donor drives from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 9 at Hawaii Kai Towne Center and July 16 at Kahala Mall. Call 845-9966.

* The Vegetarian Society presents Chef Mark Reinfeld at 7 p.m. July 12 at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse for an “uncooking” demonstration of live food preparation (seed cheeses, pates and parfaits). The award-winning Reinfeld is co-owner of the Blossoming Lotus restaurant on Kauai. Call 944-8344.


* Diamond Head Theatre presents Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods July 14-30, directed by John Rampage with music direction by Roslyn Catracchia. Call 733-0274.

* Niu Valley Middle School conducts its program pickup day from 8 to 10:30 a.m. July 13 in the cafeteria. All incoming students in grades 6-8 can pay fees, collect schedules and buy uniforms. Call 377-2440.

* Honolulu Newcomers Club hosts a Welcome Aloha Coffee July 13 and its monthly luncheon July 29 at a restaurant. For details, call 944-3310.

* The touring program, It’s Book Time with Ronald McDonald, is set for 11 a.m. July 15 at Aina Haina Library (377-2456).

* The Hawaii Animal Sanctuary conducts a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 15 at 603 Hahaione St. in Hawaii Kai. Proceeds will support the care of Hawaii’s abandoned and abused animals. Customers may also bring donations of cat, dog and rabbit food, laundry detergent, dish soap, bleach and monetary gifts. Call 395-0023.

* The Friends of Hanauma Bay conduct a cleanup of the beach, park and highway - from Keahole Street to Blow Hole - from 8:30 to 11 a.m. July 16. Volunteers should meet in the upper picnic area at the bay park, adjacent to the visitors center. For more information, call Harry Shapiro at 395-1217, or just show up.

* Kaiser High School holds its program pickup day from 8:30 to 11 a.m. July 19 in the cafeteria.

Orientation is July 27, and school starts July 28. Call 394-1200.


* Kalani High School holds its program pickup day from 7 to 11 a.m. July 21 in the cafeteria. First day for freshmen is July 28. Call 377-7744.

* Father Philip Chircop, a Jesuit priest from Malta, leads a spiritual retreat July 21-22 at Chaminade University’s Mystical Rose Chapel. Cost is $35. Call 523-1170.

* Palolo Higashi Hongwanji presents its bon dances at 7:30 p.m. July 28-29. Call 732-1491.

* The Shack Hawaii Kai presents its third annual Big Game fishing tournament at 6 a.m. July 29, and its first Shack Shootout at 6 a.m. July 30, featuring $85,000 in prizes. Entry fee is $400 per boat. Call 396-1919.
