Below are highlights of what’s happening in the East Oahu community in the next few weeks.
* Diamond Head Theatre’s Shooting Stars present a “kid-sized” version of Into the Woods at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8, directed by John Rampage. Tickets are $20. Call 733-0277, ext. 306.
* The Palolo Neighborhood Board meets at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Palolo Elementary School cafeteria. Call 527-5749.
* Hanauma Bay Education Center presents a free lecture on “Hammerheads” by UH grad student Kanesa Duncan at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10 in the park theater. Duncan works at the HIMB Shark Lab. A talk by colleague Toby Sarah Daly Engel on “Sand Bar Sharks” is set for Aug. 17; and the National Geographic film Predators will be screened Aug. 24. Call 397-5840.
* The Diamond Head-KapahuluSt. Louis Heights Neighborhood Board meets at 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Ala Wai Clubhouse. Call 527-5749.
* Sea Life Park will conduct a Moonlight Tour for families at 7 p.m. Aug. 11. Bring flashlights. Admission is $10 and $7. Call 259-2512.
* Storyteller Jeff Gere shares tales from his new CD, Silly N Spooky: Tales of Kids in Hawaii, at 5 p.m. Aug. 12 at Bestsellers in Koko Marina Center during its multi-cultural fair.
* The Hawaii Blood Bank conducts donor drives from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 30 in the Kaimuki Municipal Parking Lot. Call 845-9966.
* The state Attorney General staff accepts applications for state ID cards from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at Kalani High School. Call 587-3111.
* Kahala Mall presents the 2006 Aloha Festivals Royal Court at 11 a.m. Aug. 26; ribbons will also be on sale. The mall’s Barnes & Noble book store hosts Christine Yano from 2 to 3 p.m. the same day; she will sign copies of her book Crowning the Nice Girl: Gender, Ethnicity and Culture in Hawaii’s Cherry Blossom Festival.
* The Hawaii Blood Bank conducts donor drives from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at Hawaii Kai Towne Center, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 30 at Kaimuki Municipal Parking Lot. Call 845-9966.
* The Vegetarian Society presents Dr. Paulette Chandler at 7 p.m.Aug. 16 at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse. Her topic is “Stop Cancer Before It Starts.” Call 944-8344.
* Honolulu Newcomers Club hosts a welcome coffee at 10 a.m. Aug. 12, and will hold its monthly luncheon Aug. 17. For reservations and more information, call 396-2628.

* Schnitzer Steel is coordinating a recycling drive (appliances, metal, glass, paper, aluminum, etc.) with Hui Nalu Canoe Club and Hawaii Kai community from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 9 near the Maunalua Bay boat ramp. * A free Hawaii Kai Family Fest is set to start at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at Maunalua Bay Beach Park. Sponsored by New Hope Hawaii Kai, the event features Kutmaster Spaz and slam poetry by Kua’ana Kekuewa, plus food, fashion and games with a 1960s theme. Call 636-1656.
