Palolo Elementary first-graders were the lucky recipients of school supplies donated by Servco employees last month in the form of 50 backpacks.

“The parents and students seemed really relieved that their school supplies were taken care of,” said first-grade teacher Lily Masuda. “It was really nice that all students were prepared and ready to learn from day one, because the supplies were available and complete.”

Palolo was the first of six Oahu schools to have a gift-bearing visit from Servco, which is handing out 300 new backpacks. Employees realized parents may be struggling during the economic downturn and decided to round up donations from co-workers for the second year.

“This is the first time everything was complete,” noted Masuda. “The only thing the students had to bring was paper towels and Kleenex because the school supplies were completely taken care of. We brought the backpacks down to the class, and the kids were very excited.”

Inside they found crayons, markers, portfolios, three-ring binders, pencil boxes, glue, scissors, erasers and index cards.
