With Michael Greco as its chief operating officer, the developer of the re-branded Hale Ka Lae luxury housing project said last month that it is proceeding in a new direction that should please concerned Hawaii Kai residents and preserve the five-acre cultural site within the project property.

At the corner of Keahole Street and Hawaii Kai Drive, the condo project previously known as Hale Alii is now on track with the Trust for Public Land and Livable Hawaii Kai Hui seeking public conservation funds to buy the Hawea Heiau complex and Keawawa Wetland portion of the parcel.

“I’m proud to announce that Hale Ka Lae is moving forward with transparency and integrity,” said Greco, a Hawaii Kai resident and veteran developer of luxury condos. “Our new team is 100 percent committed to developing a residential community that will enrich the neighborhood and offer a sense of pride for the region.”

“They are deeply apologetic and now focused on saving the site,” added Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board chairman Greg Knudsen, referring to earlier bulldozing on the property, which damaged some pre-contact features on the land.

The hui, meanwhile, is proceeding with grant hearings and is optimistic. “The commissioners from the city Clean Water and Natural Lands Fund did a site inspection, and they are just raving about it,” said president Elizabeth Reilly. A hearing before the state Legacy Land Conservation Program is set for Dec. 2. The group seeks $325,000 from each fund.

The hui also has partnered with Natural Resources Conservation Services to create a wetlands plan. Reilly added that Greco has been “really generous in providing us with whatever we need.”

Developer is Hanwha Engineering & Construction, which is redesigning the condo units.

The company hired Greco to replace Michael Klein and expects to break ground next spring.
