If thoughtful residents order their Valentine roses from Logos Korean Church in Kaimuki, they can please a favorite sweetheart and help plug up a leaky roof at the same time.
Since purchasing an old church building on 12th and Pahoa avenues last year, the congregation has maintained it on their own, said Young Pak, organist and choir director. But now the roof is leaking, and they need professional help.
“Ours is a small immigrant church of about 60 members, mostly widows and senior citizens, who have been taking care of their church property - cleaning, gardening, painting and performing minor repairs,” Pak explained.“But the leaky roof of the 60-plus-year-old building requires professional attention, costing $18,000.”
Sponsored by the Aina Haina florist, Flowers and Sunshine (next to Chuck E. Cheese), the church is taking orders for red, long-stem fancy roses for delivery on or before Feb. 14.
“They are professionally arranged with leather fern and baby’s breath in a vase,” she said,“and all profit goes to the repair of the roof.” Prices range from $80 to $170, depending on size of bouquet and whether they are picked up or delivered. For details and to place an order, call Pak at 753-7751 or 450-3071 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. (Pak is a former florist herself.)
According to her husband, writer and retired UH English teacher Ty Pak, the last straw was probably Bucket Sunday:“The roof was leaking everywhere, and we had buckets all over the place.”
He added that an organ concert in 2007 - plus sales of kim chee, etc. - helped Logos to make the initial payment on the building at 959 12th Ave. It was once the home of Kaimuki Church of the Nazarene.
