Zeno, a new device that looks like a cell phone, puts an end to pimples by applying non-invasive, bacteria-killing heat

Chiu emphasizes to her patients that it’s not to be used in place of a normal skin treatment regimin. It is also not for systic acne or heavy scars.

Currently, a patient of Chiu’s is using the Zeno on a 30-day trial basis to clear moderately severe acne that plagues both sides of her face. After only a week and a half she is already seeing results.

“Her mom and her colleagues could tell which side she treated. We weren’t sure if the Zeno would work for her. She’s seeing a dermatologist and is on multiple medications,” Chiu says.

Zeno chief operating officer Robert Conrad is the mastermind behind the product’s creation and technology. In 1997, after a large pimple reared its ugly self on his face while he was giving an important speech, Conrad set to work on a prototype. With his background in medical research and the help of neurooncologist Charles Conrad, the new technology used for Zeno was born. Zeno is marketed through Tyrell Inc., a Houston company established by Conrad. After receiving clearance from the FDA, Zeno was officially placed on the market in 2002.

Zeno was listed in the December issue of Popular Science magazine in an article titled “Best of What’s New for 2005.” The product is also the “Breakthrough Product of the Year” by Allure magazine.

According to the Zeno web-site, www.myzeno.com, “Americans purchase roughly $2.1 billion in over-the-counter and prescription acne medicines each year” and “acne makes one out of 10 teenagers like themselves less and is the worst thing about adolescence.”

Adds Dr. Chiu: “There’s been very positive feedback. It’s been an interesting experience,” Chiu says.
