Keiki Motocross

The kids and adults of Keiki Motocross have put a new spin on playing in the sandbox. On weekends, if you travel off the beaten path of Sand Island Access Road, across from Matson Navigation Co. With Diamond Head rising in the distance, you’ll see dirt billowing, as the buzz of motocross bikes whistles around the carved dirt track.

Motocross receives some federal funds, but the majority of the financing for course construction and development has come from private contributions, including Junior and Jeanette Grace, who have invested considerably toward the revitalization of current infrastructure projects. To ensure that Keiki Motocross continues to establish itself as an outlet for young riders to hone their skills, certain rules and regulations are intact. Personal protective equipment including helmet, long pants, longsleeved shirts and appropriate riding shoes or sneakers are required.

As the focus at The Sandbox has been on motocross riding, many fun, new activities have been developing this past year, including its RC (remote-control) car track, as well as accommodations for BMX bicycles and fourwheel all-terrain vehicles. Also in its preliminary stages is Keiki Motocross’ own themed dune buggy safari tours which, once up and running, will provide guests a tour-guided adventure with unique views of Diamond Head and our island coastline.

Rhoden, who was introduced to motocross by his father, gradually gained an understanding of all the hard work that goes into creating courses and tracks such as the one at The Sandbox.

“My father, William Rhoden, recently passed away, and I was very close to him,” says Rhoden. “He inspired me to do something great for the kids, I made him a promise that I would see it through, and here we are today.”
