dream is coming true.
“When Joshua graduated from high school, there were very limited options to continuing education for children like him,” Lei explains. “So I think it’s only fair that we provide this service to these wonderful people who inspire us and make us appreciate life.”
With programs like Easter Seals and Goodwill Industries of Hawaii already catering to those with developmental needs, Lei is using her musical talents to reach people and provide services through an entertainment standpoint.
“We’re going through it in such a way where people are coming to the shows, watching great talent on stage, and then getting the conk on the head and realizing that this is something even greater. The meaning of this is even greater than what they originally thought,” Lei enthuses.
“Every time I’m on that stage I see all the wonderful talent gathered together volunteering their time and really having the heart for the cause. It brings us to a different level of consciousness to help a fellow man.”
Lei’s love for her younger brother is clear - surpassing all boundaries and limitations, she wants to give Joshua and others like him structure and hope of a brighter future, while also uplifting the human soul.
“Joshua is our joy,” she continues. “My brother’s such a ham, every time that we do this show we highlight him and he usually comes out during the finale and says, ‘I’m the superstar of Broadway Babies!’ So, I think he really appreciates that I’m doing it for him, but there’s nothing that I could do enough to show him that I love him.”
Lei is reaching out to the public and charitable organizations to create worldwide partnerships that will help build and secure continuing education programs after high school for people like Joshua. HBB is always accepting donations and looking for volunteers, but for now its main goal is to raise awareness for a good cause one song and costume change at a time.
“You’re going to watch the show and be like, ‘Wow, you know, it’s love that will get us through these hard times,’ and this cast is showing me that I can get by with a little help from my friends,” Lei says with a smile, quoting The Beatles.
“You’re going to get so much from the show. You’re going to get fashion, you’re going to get your heart fed, your eyes fed, your soul, your center, your core fed and you will walk out of there with a changed heart - I do believe that.”
