“Alvin will be there (with his anthuriums), and we have beautiful orchids,” says Head. “He does well every year. We have a big grower, and then we have the other orchid growers in between. You have to be a member of our club; you can’t sell unless you are a member.”
Out in Kahaluu, club member Elsie Horikawa and husband Noboru grow an astounding variety of tropical plants at their home. Elsie loves playing with her plants and, like Head and Okubo, is quite knowledgeable about horticulture and plant care - and loves to share her expertise.

While strolling through her crowded, open-air greenhouse, she points out different plants, and explains what they are, what they’re known as, how to grow, propagate and take care of them, and even where she got them.
“This is a black anthurium I got in Florida,” she explains, indicating a lovely specimen, “watermaliense. Not watermelon, watermaliense.”
These folks, many of whom are senior citizens, are a treasure trove of information and expertise for blossoming plant enthusiasts to tap into, and the club welcomes new members with open arms.
“It’s been a fellowship thing for the seniors,” explains Head of the club. “Some of them, that’s their only outing of the month. They’ve been with us so long as members; the majority of the members are seniors. It’s good for them to be in the club, but we want younger ones coming in, too, to carry on.”
So you not only can pick up some beautiful plants at bargain prices and learn more about anthuriums and their care from the experts, but you have the opportunity to actually join the club and take advantage of members’ wealth of knowledge on a regular basis.
Now, that’s a bloomin’ good deal.
