It’s that time of year again for MidWeek’s highly anticipated annual swimsuit issue.
This year, we bring you double the fun with two editions of swimwear fashions.
In this issue, current and former local beauty queens were selected to model the latest in swimwear from Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, Allure, Pink C and Sunshine Swimwear. And in this Friday’s issue, we have recruited a team of former University of Hawaii athletes to show off the newest styles from Local Motion, T&C Surf, Hawaiian Island Creations, Honolua Surf Co. and Malibu Shirts.
All photos were shot by local glamour fashion photographer Russell Tanoue and taken at the Waikiki Beach Walk, Embassy Suites-Waikiki Beach Walk, and Outrigger Reef on the Beach Hotel. Thanks to Outrigger’s Nancy Daniels for coordinating.
According to Macy’s, key trends for swimwear this season include pretty prints and patterns in a range of color. Look for suits in green, especially in refined shades of olive and emerald. And contrasting black and white looks new.
Key silhouettes include the usual triangle tops, tankinis, halter tops, low-rise boy shorts, side-tie bikinis, and maillots. But this year, update it with important details, such as rings, ruffles, embroidery, crochet, metallic, cut-outs and jewelry accents.
“When shopping for swimwear, women should look for suits that flatter their figure, balance their body and express their personal style,” says Lavina Wong, director of special events at Macy’s. “Bold prints, gathers or ruffles can enhance a small bust. Underwire or halter tops are good for large busts.
“If you have full hips, draw attention to the upper half of your body with printed tops or neckline details. Also, suits with skirted bottoms provide good coverage.”
Wong adds that you should feel comfortable and confident in your suit. Tops should provide adequate coverage and bottoms should not ride up. If you find yourself constantly adjusting, pulling and/or tugging, you’re in the wrong suit.
When you live in Hawaii, swimsuits are a year-round must. But now that summer is here, what better excuse to go out and shop for a new suit?
“I don’t think there is a particular ‘right’ swimsuit for a person,” adds Tanoue. “Every body is different. A suit should be worn to complement one’s body and personality.”
Now, find that perfect suit for you and soak up the sun. Sunscreen not included.
