HONOLULU - Sailors from Naval Station Pearl Harbor and Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet worked with members of the Honolulu Department of Environmental Services Oct. 17 to clean up Neal S. Blaisdell Park, Kapakahi stream and a residential area on Pupuole Road in Waipahu.
“We’re giving back to the community that helps support us by cleaning out the streams and the bike paths along Kamehameha Highway,” said Religious Programs Specialist 2nd Class Justin Robison, assigned to Naval Station Pearl Harbor Chapel.
In all, more than 40 Sailors volunteered for the clean-up project.
“It enhances the morale of the Sailor that works 12 to 16 hour days to come out here and enjoy the beautiful sunshine. It also allows for other people in the community to see that ... we’re willing to give back to the community,” said Master Chief Cryptologic Technician R.T. McClain, assigned to Kunia Field Station.
At the different areas, Sailors cleaned up graffiti, picked up garbage and helped clear away pickle weed, an invasive plant which reduces the amount of sunlight that reaches the water.
“We’re just trying to keep it clean and make it a better place for those that come by and use the area on a regular basis,” said McClain.
