Violet Loo is a new trustee of Hawaii Pacific University, where she and her late husband Paul have envisioned and supported an ambitious theater complex for the Windward campus - among many other HPU programs. Neuropsychologist Tanya Schwartz has received two awards - and they are a mouthful - from her peers in the field. A Kailua resident affiliated with Rehab hospital, Kaiser, Queen’s, Hawaii Medical Center and the Veterans Administration, Tanya has earned Fellow status with the National Academy of Neuropsychology and has won the Distinguished Service Award from the Hawaii Psychological Association. She’s known for dedicating many volunteer hours as an advocate for mental health issues ...
Windward groups shared their oversupply of Christmas trees with the less fortunate. Both Habilitat (150 trees) and the Keolu Elementary PTSA (50 trees) made the most of their unsold greenery by giving it away to families at Kalihi housing projects. “We took a loss,” says Keolu PTSA treasurer Michelle Isaacs, “and it’s not a big thing, since so many are doing so much for the less fortunate. But our loss became someone’s joy” ...
Kaneohe residents experiencing a different kind of joy recently: Barbara Yee won $9,440 and Elaine Fujisaka won $8,000 on the California Hotel slots, while George Takishita earned his second Golden Arm award for holding the dice for one hour and one minute. Services Dec. 17 for the late Jo Tolhurst were interrupted briefly while a guest stomped a centipede to death at Windward United Church of Christ. The incident was fitting, says Jo’s son Chuck, because past run-ins fed her distaste for the critters. Her friends and family then ate together at Kin Wah Chop Suey - her favorite haunt after she retired from a career as MidWeek‘s proof reader. Aloha, Jo. The Kalaheo graduate currently tours with Colbie Caillat‘s band, but found time to make a new CD, All Attached. There’s a release party tonight (Dec. 26) from 6 to 8 p.m. in Ala Moana Hotel’s Pakele Lounge with Ernie Cruz Jr. and Pali, and a concert Friday at PCC (see calendar). Seems like Justin’s still on tour, even when he’s back home ...
