Del.icio.usHawaii’s Mrs. America 2000, Leslie Lam, has a new title. The Kaneohe resident was named a 2007 Global Hero by Medronic Inc. and will run with her daughter Amber in the company’s Twin Cities Marathon Oct. 7 in Minnesota. Leslie has been a dedicated supporter of living an active life, even after acquiring a pacemaker in 2002 to monitor a genetic condition that causes her heart to beat too slowly. She only began running in 2006, at the Honolulu Marathon. “My life has dramatically improved with the gift of technology in countless ways,” Leslie says ... Cadets were thrilled about their experiences at Castle High’s annual U.S. Marine Corps JROTC leadership school last month at the Kaneohe base. The 91 teens from 17 Hawaii and mainland schools rappelled, swam, shot, fought, drilled and studied their way through the week. They even had terrorism force training at Ford Island. “I’m going to miss those kids,” Pfc. James Johnson admitted to the Hawaii Marine. “Sure they were a pain sometimes, but they were good kids overall” ... Hawaii resident Joy Abbott, widow of George Abbott (Mr. Broadway) who adapted The Pajama Game to the stage, is expected to attend Friday’s opening of the Paliku Theatre show (see calendar). The musical also is special to its director, Ron Bright - it was the very first one he directed 50 years ago as a young Castle High School teacher. “I still have my original script,” Ron says. “Just a little worse for wear, but full of great ideas” ...
Speaking of the current PJ play, you may recognize the leads, Tricia Marciel and Lance Williams, from their TV commercials. Tricia plays that 1950s housewife raving about cable TV, and Lance is one of three car insurance super-agents traveling in a car together. He’s the tall one ... Speaking of plays, Kaneohe playwright Y York‘s recent Honolulu debut of the adult comedy Framed is now available for your viewing pleasure on YouTube (or go to www.yyork.com/Framed.htm) ... Landscape architect Greg Boyer and wife Lynn are featured for the second time in a year in Sunset magazine. Their lush Kahaluu home and grounds unfold from page 90 of the August issue. Highlight is a Rice House, which Greg made from a kit, shipped in pieces from Indonesia ...

Kaneohe teen Charles Sonido left his mark at the U.S. Chess Federation’s U.S. Open this month in Cherry Hill, N.J. As Hawaii’s delegate to the competition, Charles was seeded 41st, but tied for 21st place (in a high school championship there). He then beat out a well-known chess master Jerry Hanken in the U.S. Open, and placed second overall for his rating group. Here’s a tip from the quiet Punahou junior: “I tried to play my best strategic game and to be on the look-out for any errors by my opponents - even the best players make mistakes, and in chess, those mistakes can be fatal!” ... Shannon Wood needs help with her malassada booth at the Windward Hoolaulea Sept. 22 (247-6366). It could be a major effort as her conservative estimate for sales is 7,000 malassadas and 1,500 drinks for a crowd of up to 15,000 people ... Wanna meet a new principal? Ahuimanu Elementary has one, and the coffee hour starts at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the school library (239-3125). Randy Scoville lives in Kailua and has worked at Kahuku High & Intermediate, and Aikahi Elementary, among others ... Veteran Windward musicians George Kuo, Martin Pahinui and Aaron Mahi are strumming and crooning their way through Kaleponi (Calif.) this week - in Santa Cruz, Redwood City and Grass Valley ... While hosting a delegation of Mongolian lawmakers here this month, our U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono took them to visit Nalo Farms and a Waimanalo Pre-Plus program
