Just call them sweet and lucky. Bruce Bargfrede of Kaneohe and Kenneth Ho Jr. of Waimanalo have each won a round trip for two to Kona courtesy of Hawaiian Host. They are among 15 names drawn at random from 3,500 entries in an online Kona Caramacs contest (the company’s newest candy) ... Milan Tresnak of Kailua has the lead in All for Melissa, a local film debuting in the Hawaii International Film Festival Oct. 18-28 at Dole Cannery theaters ...

Kahaluu’s Keith Krueger (239-5958) is organizing a rock concert. Not. He’s heading up the Rock and Mineral Society’s show from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. You won’t believe the variety of rocks and minerals and fossils there are on this island. See for yourself, and buy a few ... Krystle Manguba-Glover (Kahuku ‘07) has graduated from the Army ROTC leaders training course at Fort Knox, Ky. Krystle is currently enrolled at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell ... Paintings of women by Carrie Able, who has her studio in Kailua, will be on sale at the Nuuanu Street Festival Saturday (in Pacific Traditions Gallery) ...


Kaaawa resident Joan Yanagihara has joined St. Andrew’s Priory as its director of institutional advancement and alumnae relations - which means raising money for the 140-year-old girls’ school. Joan also has helped enrich the budgets of the Hawaiian Humane Society, Bishop Museum, UH Foundation, Nature Conservancy and others in her long career ... Kailua’s Carol Egan, who chairs the Windward Arts Council’s dance committee, has returned from Washington, D.C., where she was invited to join the National Endowment for the Arts’ Dance Panel on Access to Artistic Excellence. The group selected more than 100 dance companies, presenters and dance service groups for future funding. Carol, who graduated from Juilliard, has spent 40 years dancing, teaching and choreographing. She’s retired from the UC Berkeley dance faculty after 20 years of service ...

Speaking of money for the arts, congratulations to Becky Dunning of Kaneohe, just named executive director of the Friends of the Hawaii State Art Museum. She was most recently vp of development for PBS Hawaii. Her job at the museum is similar, she says: “Convincing people to contribute financial support to a facility and programs that are provided free to everyone.” Make Becky’s job easier. Send money now ... Here comes some more: Allan Taketa of Kaneohe won $12,500 playing downtown Las Vegas slots recently, Kailua’s Patricia Calhau won $10,000, Kaneohe’s Franklin Kaahu raked in $8,000, and Kahuku’s Darrilyn Crisostomo won $5,000 ...


Rich Budnick is putting together another stellar Honolulu Writers Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at Blaisdell Center (395-1161). He says it’s much cheaper than the Maui one, no plane or ferry needed, and the workshops feature a dozen pros, including Windward’s own Ian MacMillan, Bob Dye, Tammy Yee and Waimea Williams ... Shane Dydasco (Castle ‘05) has finished basic combat training with the Army National Guard at Fort Jackson, S.C. ...


Kaneohe’s Allen Steck was in Las Vegas last weekend to compete on Hawaii’s U.S. Tennis Association men’s team for the championship of the nation’s largest recreational tennis league (3.5 adult level). Playing for the women’s team were Kailua’s Leeann Canne and Wendy Orita ... For fans of the Keiki Palaka Band, Mel and Lynn Murata are putting on the 10th annual “Hot Palaka Nights” Oct. 26 at Enchanted Lake Elementary, with plenty of beef stew and music.
