With schools always struggling to get repair funds, it’s good to hear about a wish that’s easier to grant. Kalaheo PCNC Meg Gammon wants tennis balls - 150 per classroom - to keep chair and table legs from scraping new flooring. “Just drop off a can or two in the office with my name on them,” she humbly requests ... Kaneohe Yacht Club was home last week to the 122-foot Lynx whose crew relaxed with club members between its student-education trip from Oakland and a training voyage back to Astoria. It’s a replica of a 1812 privateer schooner, but the pirates and other characters on the crew are genuine, according to those who partied with them on shore - especially Jim Rich, the ship’s melodious blacksmith, and Jeremiah Gempler, who caught a hammerhead off the dock with his bare hands ... Margaret Lloyd of Kailua will perform at this year’s free Midsummer Night’s Organ Concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Central Union Church, where she is the organist ... A contestant in the July 20 Miss Le Lalelei O Samoa Pageant in Honolulu, Hauula’s Kuki Esera has vowed to educate her fellow Samoans about their culture “so they will embrace it instead of resist it.” Kuki graduated from Kahuku High and is studying at UH-Manoa to prepare herself for the task. “My ultimate dream,” she says, “is to see young people converse in Samoan instead of having it translated to them.”

Fellow contestant Mabeleen Reid of BYU-Hawaii was second runner-up. As a student of international business management, Mabeleen aims to “promote businesses in Samoa and assist them in developing business opportunities” ... A $1,000 scholarship, named after Kailua’s Army Lt. Nainoa Hoe, has been awarded to Damien High graduate Justin Sambueno, who will study business at DePauw. Nainoa died from sniper fire in January 2005 in Mosul, Iraq ... David Peters, a Queen Liliuokalani trustee for nearly 30 years, retired last week on his 84th birthday “to spend more time with my wife in Kailua,” he told reporters. David and Mary are active in many local causes, and have been honored as Hawaiian Civic Club Family of the Year ... Lanikai’s Bruce Dinman called in after reading the July 25 MidWeek Poll on “What is your weakness?” where golf instructor Randy Shibuya admitted he just can’t quit smoking. Bruce has a tip for Randy: “From one ex-smoker to another, I know. Hold that cigarette and say ‘this is the last one I’m ever going to smoke.’ Cutting back didn’t do it; cold turkey worked for me” ... Sometimes the best handyman is as close as your neighborhood hardware store. Kaneohe’s Hardware Hawaii assistant store manager Tasha Dela Cruz is lamenting the loss of employee Mike Malette, who leaves the island Aug. 22. “He’s the guy you can take a pile of mess to and he’ll put it back together,” Tasha says. “There’s a lot of customers who know and will miss him” ... Windward musicians continue to play in HPR’s Atherton studio (955-8821). Coming up at 7 p.m. next Monday (Aug. 20) is Kupaaina for a taping of Aloha Shorts. Then Steve Howells of Laie will play with Shawn Moseley‘s Evasive Species band at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25. Shawn himself grew up in Kaneohe and is a proud alumnus of St. Ann’s School ... The Young Artists Helping Young Artists benefit tonight (Aug. 15) at Hawaii State Art Museum, will have works by Kaneohe photographer James Anshutz and Kailua jeweler Jeremy Holland, among others, up for auction to help Rehab hospital. The event starts at 4 p.m. (566-3457) ... Be advised (or forewarned): Dog Chapman will appear at the new Kaneohe Borders at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 to autograph copies of his new book ...
