Del.icio.usKaneohe’s celebrity married couple, Bruddah Sam and Lina Girl, have become teachers as well as musicians. They welcome students - for free - each Wednesday night at the Kaneohe LDS chapel on Waikalua Road. At 5 p.m. they teach ukulele lessons, at 6 p.m. Lina teaches bon dancing, and she follows that with hula for exercise at 7 p.m. Call 256-5082 to find out more ... Congratulations to adviser Libby Young, student editor-in-chief Mark Brislin and the staff of WCC’s student newspaper, Ka ‘Ohana, which won yet another national award - special merit for format, content and presentation - from the American Scholastic Press Association. Look for the paper’s new website this fall ... Aha! They’re baaack. A kolea was spotted in Ahuimanu valley on Aug. 2 in the morning by Kelly Chang. She then flew off to Oregon herself (in a plane) ... Believe it or not, Hawaii Student Television is actually recruiting adults for its next film. They need a male and female to play young parents and a woman of about 50 to play a grandmother. Filming dates are this Saturday and Sunday or Aug. 18 and 19. Chef Paul Onishi‘s first “Wrap and Roll” August class is already sold out, so Castle Wellness Center has added a second one for 7 p.m. Aug. 30. The landscaping adventures of homeowners Steven and Naomi Lee will be on the national Home & Garden TV at 9:30 a.m. (ET/PT) Sunday. The couple bought their 1940s home on Kaneohe Bay seven years ago, inheriting some serious yard problems ...
B.K. Cannon
A TV veteran at age 14, B.K. Cannon had a role in Flight 29 Down and is also in Flight 29 Down, The Movie, which premiers Aug. 26 at Sunset on the Beach in Waikiki. Not one to sit idle, B.K. flew to Scotland with her Mid-Pac drama troupe last week. She plays Guanyin, the goddess of mercy, in her school’s play at an Edinburgh festival. Stay tuned for more developments ... If it’s not too late, you can take in Calvin Kumano‘s orchid culture class at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at Kahuku Library ... Windward Ho’olaulea co-chair Janis Chun says vendors can get free radio exposure if they offer gift certificates of $25 or more. The announcements will run on KCCN and KINE the week before the Sept. 22 Ho’olaulea, and winners can redeem their prizes at the event. Deadline to sign up is Aug. 15 ... Michael Ives is a featured artist this Sunday at the Kailua Art Walk. From 2 to 5 p.m. he’ll be at Island Treasures with three of his self-described “primitive naïve child-like” pieces as well as prints and videos on how he produces them. I like the Molokai Watermelon on his website: “I wanted to make the texture and taste of this juicy watermelon come right out of the painting,” he explains online. So what does he do? He drops sea salt onto the wet acrylic. It works. Mike and his wife Jill flee Arizona for Lanikai every summer. I wonder why ... Coconut Joe plays the Honolulu Club at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 23 ... KEY board member Iris Catalani reports that a promotional breakfast at Finance Factors downtown netted $3,000 for KEY and for Good Bears of the World ... Speaking of bears, Kaneohe Boy Scout Troop 329 had an exciting hike through the Grand Tetons this summer, especially when they came across a bear cub. The cub sighting was followed quickly by the mama, a 300-pound grizzly. “It was heading toward our group,” recalls Brian Moriki, “so I prompted our boys to retreat slowly out of the trail.” It worked, but not before the troop heard Brian utter a few expletives starting with “holy” ... Briggs Christie and Lani Almanza of the Windward ACS unit say “we ARE beating cancer.” The survival rate has grown to three out of five, or 64 percent, and thank you very much to all the Relay volunteers.
