Sydney the Tibetan spaniel has a weekly date with the elders at Maluhia hospital. His Kailua human, Anita HabanNakamaejo, takes him every Monday morning to visit the residents there. “It just brings them joy,” says Anita, who also operates the home-care agency Comforting Hands Hawaii. Maluhia even staged a birthday party for Sydney once, complete with his favorite food, sweet potato. His ancestors were bred by Tibetan monks to be quiet little prayer dogs and robe warmers, Anita explains. The monks would stick the warm furry things under their robes to thaw out. Sydney’s genes must be strong because he’s allergic to meat and, according to Anita, he goes into a trance every time he hears a church bell ... Kailua’s creative choreographer Cheryl Flaharty will restage IONA Contemporary Dance Company’s remarkable Electric Blue show April 6 and 7 at Hawaii Theatre (528-0506).
