This girl has come a long way since her days in Laie. University of Pennsylvania student Janine Alix Rogers just won a Gates (as in Bill and Melinda) Scholarship to Cambridge University to pursue her master’s degree in “history, philosophy and sociology of science, technology and medicine with a focus in modern medicine and biomedical sciences,” she says. The prestigious grant is worth about $40,000 for one year ... Wanna work with giant clams? The Oceanic Institute’s Tom Ogawa is looking for volunteer students to “work closely with these delicate marine animals” and gain OI experience. Call 259-3169 ...

Hams, not clams: Kainalu Elementary student Kiana Ahovelo, a Tongan-Irish lass coached by Eunice DeMello, place second -twice - last year in local and national singing contests with her rendition of Danny Boy. Kiana also performs with Filipino-Irish twins Caleigh and Delia Fabro to promote their Celtic heritage. Erin Go Bragh, by the way ... Candice Bonser (Castle ‘96) is director of financial aid at Heald College, where she graduated with high honors from its accounting and computer program. Here’s the photo of Kailua’s Maureen Lichter, who’s heading up product management for Central Pacific Bank. She was faceless in last week’s Waha Nui ... Kailua artist Warren Stenberg is faceless here, too, but his art has made him a cover boy. He’s on the front and back covers of the quarterly industry publication, Concierge Guide-Oahu. Warren is also in the middle part, with a biography. If you come across this slick guide, look for Lanikai Palms on the front ... Windward Boys & Girls Clubhouse director Duane Samson is quite pleased with a substantial amount of art supplies that have come in, donated by the family of Carl Kaizawa to the kids. The Kaneohe artist and ad agency owner died last November. “We have great volunteer art teachers, and the students’ work is very good, too,” Duane says. Also coming in: 20 ukuleles from Norman Takeya of the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii’s Ukes for Kids Project. Duane has proven his own “artistic” skill as well. He took first place in a November keno tournament at the California Hotel ...

Castle High and Cal State Northridge graduate Lisa Soares Hale, now living in Phoenix, has published Penny Love, a children’s book based on her grandmother and her childhood memories of Hawaii (www.PennyLoveBook.com) ... It’s sad, but true. Mike McKenna‘s dog Hana Girl died Feb. 19 at age 18, after spending much of her life greeting customers at the Kailua car dealership. Koki, Mike’s other golden retriever, is stepping up to fill Hana’s paws ... Denise Wahinekapu-Gorman (Kailua ‘87) has deployed to Southwest Asia for Operation Horn of Africa.
