Since her experience with the makeover team of plastic surgeon Robert Peterson and others, Maunalei has taken on the tough job of interim executive director of Hawaii’s charter schools. Hmmm. That could put a frown back on her face ... Edie and Ted Magnani will represent the Kailua Seniors Club as its “sweethearts” Thursday at the city’s annual Valentine dance at Blaisdell Center ...
Kailua native Steele Platt will open the 16th Yard House Restaurant Feb. 11 on Waikiki Beach Walk. He’s made enough room for 346 folks hungry for Pacific Rim fare ... Speaking of protein, Mindy Jaffe has some worms for you, complete with mini colony and instructions for care, at her Kailua workshop Saturday at Christ Church Uniting (see calendar) ... The folks at Christ Church also hosted a class recently to prepare volunteers to monitor a pregnant dolphin at Coconut Island. It all relates to their mission of being good stewards of God‘s green earth, says Char Hosenfeld of the CCU Green Team ... Matua Tuaolo (Kailua ‘06) has completed basic training with the Army National Guard at Fort Jackson, S.C. ... Rose Ellen Chin of Kaneohe has an exhibit of her art work up until Feb. 28 at the Louis Vuitton Creative Art Gallery at Rehab Hospital (531-3511) ... Other forms of “art” are apparently flourishing in Kaneohe. As police Officer Herbert Lau reported to Windward neighborhood watch coordinators recently: In 2005 there were 1,111 incidents of graffiti and 227 arrests; in 2006, there were 1,562 incidents and 294 arrests ... The Kailua Macy’s ranked third and Windward Mall fifth among the 195 Macy’s West stores in the chain’s “Thanks for Sharing” holiday fundraiser. In all, Hawaii and Guam stores raised more than $350,000 for local charities ... Speaking of holidays, a holiday party given by base commander, Brig. Gen. Steven Hummer, also served as a collection spot for good reads for Mokapu Elementary children. More than 100 books were presented by Marines and civilians to a delighted principal Annette Ostrem ... Lucky slot players on recent trips to downtown Las Vegas include Kailua’s Rose Birch, $25,000, and Kaneohe’s Arthur Teruya ($9,244) and Barbara Yee ( $4,000) ... Brent Koki has been dancing and traveling with Disney’s Cheetah Girls on their current tour, which played in Blaisdell Concert Hall last weekend. Brent is from Kaneohe and has been a familiar face (and feet) in local dance choreography at Ron Bright Theatre and Marcelo Pacleb‘s 24-VII DanceForce ... Speaking of tours, Paliku Theater manager Tom Holowach says the cast and crew of James and the Giant Peach are “very excited” about Paliku’s first road tour. Of course, the world premiere musical plays three times in Kaneohe and just once at Hawaii Theatre. But still ...
Kaneohe’s Stacie Nakashima has joined the board for the Hawaii Women’s Rodeo Association, which puts on six jackpot rodeos a year ... Kailua’s Alfred Bloom invites you to learn about Buddhism, his favorite subject and lifelong study. Panel talks are set for Feb. 7, 21 and March 7 at Pacific Buddhist Academy. Windward talents once again producing good musicals at Army Community Theatre: Vanita Rae Smith directs the play, Lorna Mount directs the music, and TV reporter/actor Keoki Kerr takes orders from both women in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, opening Feb. 22 at Fort Shafter ... Sad to hear of the passing of Abe Weinstein, founder and the energetic mover and shaker behind the Hawaii International Jazz Festival. Abe’s colleagues will honor his memory by carrying on with this week’s festival at Windward Community College. I recall when Abe would share with me the names of the younger jazz talent involved, so I could put them in this very column. Farewell, good music man
