Vinnie Gonzales, has purchased a cell phone from an Iraqi store, and he’ll be calling his Kaneohe friends - just as soon as he learns how to read the users’ manual. “The funny part is the heading for the sections, like ‘how to place a call,’ are in English,” Vinnie says, “but the directions under it are all in Arabic.” ... Kailua resident Victoria Kaai is the lucky winner of a $250 prize drawing from Finance Factors in a recent promotion that honored its loyal customers. What will she do with it? The Nike 5K for Kids race Oct. 2 in Waikiki saw five Windward runners finish at or near the lead in their age groups: Kaneohe’s Jan Sauder was first and Kathleen McGovern second in the women’s 50-54 category; George Ishiki of Kaneohe was first for men 75-79; Marilyn McGovern first for women 75-79, and Jasmine Knight of Kailua placed third for girls 15 to 19. Ed Hirata has retired again. The veteran government administrator retired last Friday as city director of Transportation Services. A longtime Kaneohe resident, Ed has worked for the city, state, BWS, HECO, etc., since 1968, wearing many hats - as an engineer, supervisor and manager. Plus he’s a retired brigadier general in the Army Reserve. And on one a stormy night during the Fasi era, he even postponed Halloween. Oh, the power ... Lanikai Juice had its moment in the national spotlight Oct. 5 during the Oprah Winfrey show. Her guest was Matthew Fox of the Hawaii TV series Lost, shown blending some of his favorite fresh-fruit smoothies at the Kailua thirst-quenching shop. “We are honored to be on Oprah,” says owner Pablo Gonzales, “and we want to thank Matthew Fox for choosing us as one of his favorite places” ... Interior Secretary Gale Norton has appointed Kailua’s Colin C. Kippen to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Review Committee. A Native Hawaiian himself, Colin has served in many ways - even as chief tribal judge for the Suquamish people in Washington state ... Kailua artist Brenda Cablayan, noted for her Windward beachside scenes, opens a new show Thursday at Bethel Street Gallery downtown.
