The girl who played the lead of Laurey in Paliku Theatre’s recent Oklahoma! production, Ashley Warling, will soon portray Pocahontas at Florida’s DisneyWorld, which requires mucho singing as well as working with live animals on stage ... Kailua artist Karen Kiefer will present Make Shame, a solo retrospective of her paintings, from Jan. 20 to Feb.19 downtown at the Pauahi Tower exhibition space, 1001 Bishop St. (263-4732). Karen is known for producing “breathtaking beauty in unsettling works of art” ... Hawaii State Hospital chaplain Dave Edwards was especially pleased with the hospitality of the folks at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Kailua, where the congregation hosted its 28th annual Christmas dinner and program for patients. “It was heartening to see the many church members being so warm and giving to our clients,” Dave recalled in the hospital’s newsletter. “It was a very positive experience” ... When Hawaii Pacific University’s nearly 100 nursing students graduated last week, they heard an address from former labor and delivery nurse Dee Jay Mailer. Jane Campbell notes that the Windward Arts Council made “a financial gift” to Justin Ricafort‘s family to help with his and his dad’s travel expenses to Washington, D.C., last week. A Castle junior (see Jan. 3 Windward Islander), Justin was one of five young finalists vying for a guest artist spot with the U.S. Air Force Band for a concert on March 4. Stay tuned ... Retired, award-winning UH oceanography professor Richard Radtke is proposing to start an Internet camera sales business from his Kaneohe home, and he won’t let total disability from multiple sclerosis and trigeminal neuralgia stop him. (Richard started the Sea of Dreams Foundation to empower people with disabilities toward self-employment.) Emerging from more than a year of excruciating pain, Richard is hoping to obtain financing for the business and for buying an $8,000 ceiling lift to keep him mobile at home and give his wife’s back a reprieve. Kailua resident Bonnie-Lee Pang has been hired by Atlas Insurance Agency for its new position of benefit consulting manager. The company picked Bonnie for her experience in the benefits field, working for 12 years with Kaiser, HMSA and Mercer Health & Benefits. She also is a member of the Windward subarea committee for the State Health Planning and Development Agency, among other professional groups ... A little more about Kailua’s Kyle Galdeira, HPU valedictorian mentioned in the Jan. 3 Waha Nui: He’s got a job! Hawaii Business magazine has hired Kyle as a full-time writer ... Speaking of jobs, if you’d prefer an artistic job with no pay and lots of experience, Crystal Brewe is looking for interns at IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre in Kailua (262-0110) ... Kaneohe’s Louise South is still singing at Atherton studio (per last week’s column), but the date’s been changed to 4 p.m. Jan. 28, and the program’s new title is The Carmen Connection - with some Scottish music thrown in for good measure ... Hina Mauka’s new CEO Alan Johnson (see page 1 and 2) has many tools at his disposal to point addicts toward rehabilitation with compassion, but there are no guarantees. During a recent interview, he admitted that the healing of one particularly troubled soul has eluded him - his own sister. “The sad part is I’m just like everybody else dealing with strong emotional issues,” he says. “It’s a heart-breaker for me. I’ve helped others, but I seem powerless with her”
