Musicians nearly always have a day job, and Jon Koki is no exception. Every Saturday night he entertains with his acoustic guitar and smooth voice at Chao Phya Thai in Windward City Shopping Center. But by day Jon works as community services coordinator for Ho’opono, the state Department of Human Services program for the blind ... U.S. Rep. Ed Case has announced his list of nominees for U.S. military academies, which includes four Windward students. Kalaheo’s Jessica Geltmacher and Jed Lifa are both alternate nominees for West Point. Jessica is also listed by Case for the Merchant Marine Academy and an alternate for the Air Force Academy.

James Bashford of Kahuku High is a principal nominee for West Point; Michael Gomez, a McKinley High student from Kaneohe, is up for the Merchant Marines and is a competitive nominee for the U.S. Naval Academy ... Hawaii Pacific University recently promoted Kaneohe resident John Fleckles from regular vice president to senior vice president of academic affairs. John was a history professor at Hawaii Loa College before it merged with HPU in 1992 ... News tip from the past: Kailua resident Elnora Guieb won a neighbor island trip when Finance Factors drew her name at the “I Love Kailua Town Party” in April. I just found the announcement in my “files” this week.
