She won the grand prize last month in the 2006 Al Waterson and You Vocal Competition, which comes with an appearance on the Don Ho show, OC16 and some recordings. Briana began training at age 5 at Judie and Derek Lee‘s now-closed Allegra Performing Arts Co. ... Speaking of performers, the Keiki Palaka Band and George Kuo are among the Windward entertainers booked for Keith and Carmen Haugen‘s Peace on Earth Christmas concert at 6:30 tonight (Dec. 20) at Kapiolani Bandstand ...
Artists of all ages have been coming to Daunna Yanoviak‘s Pohakupu home studio for three decades, and she taught in schools for nearly 20 years before that. “It’s a fun way to live,” Daunna admits. Besides, by bringing the classes to her home full time in those early years, “I didn’t need a baby-sitter!” (The studio’s exhibit is up through Dec. 30 at Ho’omaluhia) ... Waimanalo’s Scott Liedtke received the Foundation for Excellent Schools Mario Pena Award last month in New York. Scott is admissions director at Hawaii Pacific University where he creates school/college partnerships to help underserved students get into college. “If what I do has an impact on kids,” he says, “then I’m one of the luckiest people I know because I love what I do” ... Dream Like New York, a song written by Erin Chang (Castle ‘96) and her husband, Tyrone Wells, is being played before every NY Nicks game in Madison Square Garden ... Speaking of athletics, Jayme Newhouse is certifiably fit, as are all of her staff at Stott Pilates on Maluniu Avenue. Oscar Botelho was walking up Kahuhipa Street, paycheck in his pocket. Reaching home he discovered the check was missing. “Really stressful” is how he described that moment. Never fear, readers: It was returned to him by two children (Heeia and King students) the next day at Windward Dodge where he works. As their mom told Oscar, they had found it on the sidewalk and were worried that “someone wouldn’t get their Christmas money” ... Pastor Guy Kapeliela and the outreach folks of Hope Chapel Olomana threw a “Light a Life” party, lunch and gospel message for about 200 Windward homeless people Dec. 9 at Kailua District Park. Each guest was named on a star hanging on a Christmas tree, and each star was redeemable for a gift. “It’s like our own Angel Tree,” explains Debi Fairbairn ... Kailua’s brother-and-sister team of Judah and Sunshine Oschner represented Hawaii at the World Salsa Championships Dec. 13-16 in Las Vegas; finals to be broadcast on ESPN.
