The Kailua environmental advocate will get schooled Jan. 4-6 in Gore Country (Nashville, Tenn.) ... Kailua Surfrider band director Henry Fu wants you at the band’s winter concert (see calendar). Why? It’s free, and the students are playing “some really cool pieces” ... Speaking of music, the Kainalu Chorus performs at 1 p.m.

Saturday at Pearlridge Center near Crazy Shirts ... Paul Berlanger is the Volunteer Leader of 2006, honored recently by the Network of Volunteer Leaders. The Kailua man is executive director of the Pearl Harbor Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which takes him all over the Pacific doing relief casework, training other volunteers, and helping them with computer setups. Paul’s been running municipal, non-profit and other volunteer programs for decades. For a living he runs Hawaii Management Innovations, but still makes time to sing with the Honolulu Symphony Chorus ... Slow down and look for the “Live and Let Live” signwavers against speeding from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at Castle Junction by Kaneohe Ranch. Better yet, bring your own sign and join them by calling Officer Herbert Lau at 247-0748 ...


Perhaps the busiest caroler on the island is Mayor Mufi Hannemann. Kaneohe got a sample on Nov. 30 when Mufi sang and lit the lights at the first Windward City Lights Festival by the police and fire stations. Hope Chapel Kaneohe Bay, which set up the plantation-themed decor by the police station, provided punch and 600 cookies for the crowd ... Gov. Linda Lingle proclaimed (she did not sing it) American Association of University Women Day on Nov. 28, which was the 125th anniversary of the national organization. The Windward AAUW branch, by the way, has given more than $67,000 in scholarships to Windward women since 1970 ... Spirit of the season: Director Larry Trela takes the King Intermediate band to the Hawaii State Hospital gym Thursday for its annual holiday star-lighting concert for patients and staff. And Sunday St. Christopher’s Church will host its 28th holiday dinner and caroling for HSH patients ... The Japan Religious Committee for World Federation is at the Marine base Dec. 5 to visit the marker of Japanese Zero pilot Lt. Fusata Iida, the Klippers Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial
