Well-known in Kailua for his Portuguese baking skills, Non DeMello altered his cooking theme a little for Emmanuel Church’s Chocolate Extravaganza Nov. 11. He produced deep-fried brownies for the grazing crowd. “Another thing that’s making the rounds at mainland carnivals,” Non notes, “is deep-fried Snickers.”

According to event co-chair Jane Tonokawa, the benefit attracted 300 people and netted $10,000 for local charities and the church ... Hannah Skaggs, the 8-year-old Kailua girl who crusaded recently for more doing and less watching (TV) for kids, has declared her “No Screen Day” campaign a great success. “I passed out fliers and spoke to over 2,000 kids,” she reports, “and we got over 600 kids to participate” ...
