Del.icio.usHawaii offers many opportunities for little girls with big voices. Take 10-year-old Mayumi Fernandez, for example. While waiting to appear as the Frenchman’s daughter in Paliku Theatre’s South Pacific (opening Oct. 7), she warmed up her vocal cords on the Star Spangled Banner and Hawaii Ponoi at the opening game for UH Wahine volleyball ... Helping with the musical’s choreography and as its consultant in French dialogue is former newscaster and CPAC alumna Jodi Leong (she minored in the language in college) ... Dan Nelson (Kailua ‘87) has a new role. He’s “class administrator” for an online reunion, complete with message board, class news, alumni biographies, etc., etc. He invites classmates to join the party at http://www.classreport.com; click on Hawaii, then Kailua, then 1987 ... Could be some of those Surfriders listened to Shari Emerson at the Kailua branch of Bank of Hawaii. Shari was in the top four of her BoH region in the number of new accounts opened. And all that without the iPod shuffle! ... Bob Hockaday has assembled a book about all the trees on the 16-acre Pohai Nani grounds, gleaned from research by residents over the years. Bob is the facility’s newsletter editor. How many kinds of trees, you ask? 53 ... Young Brothers has hired attorney Roy Catalani of Kaneohe to head up strategic planning for its interisland barge operations. Sounds like a good plan, because Roy knows about planning: He’s chaired the State Land Use Commission and was deputy director of the Office of State Planning ... Selene Mersereau of Kailua has earned an MA in marriage and family therapy from Argosy University-Hawaii ... All they want is the whole world. The English as a Second Language classes at Castle High are seeking a globe, “the bigger the better.” Call 233-5379 ... Nicole Tajima of Kailua has graduated magna cum laude from Seattle Pacific University with a BA in communication ... Good news for readers of insightful prose about Hawaii.

Longtime Kailua author Ian MacMillan has released his 10th book: The Braid, which is already on a list of favorite reads for a UH literary celebration next spring ... Along with 27 bags of trash cleared Sept. 10 from Kalanianaole Highway (Keolu Drive to Castle hospital), Ben Baniaga reports that the Pali Lions’ litter pickers also found a dead black dog and “an empty erectile dysfunction carton” ... That same week, Shannon Wood reports, the Windward Ahupua’a Alliance snagged a motorbike and a golf cart in its Kapaa Quarry Road cleanup ... Robert Boyle has been appointed manager of Turtle Bay Resort, which is a long way from his last job as president of a resort in Whitefield, N.H. Robert has also handled resorts in Kentucky, Vermont and Colorado ... Kailua resident Art Ushijima is wearing two hats these days.

The president and CEO of The Queen’s Medical Center now pulls the same duty for The Queen’s Health Systems, Hawaii’s oldest non-profit health system with 4,500 employees. (Hope he stays healthy!) ... Kaneohe’s Joe Ahuna and his family stay healthy through ethnic dancing. They’ll be performing a Navajo hoop dance Saturday afternoon at the 31st annual American Indian Pow Wow at Thomas Square ... Tony Young, Paliku Theatre’s choreographer for South Pacific (see calendar) should be on the old What’s My Line TV show, signing in as “tummy rolling consultant.” Tony gives this kind of advice to Larry Bialock for his stage delivery in the song There Is Nothing Like a Dame. Puohala Elementary must have caught on to Tony’s many talents, too. The school has just hired him to be its “physical movement” instructor
