The Aloha Festivals Royal Court has been selected, and William “Baba” Alimoot Jr. is the new king for Oahu. The Kaneohe musician and producer also has eight royal subjects, ah, grandchildren. On the court with him is princess Ashlyn Kaiulani Kaahanui, a senior at Kahuku High. Both Ashlyn and King William are one-quarter Hawaiian and are prepared for a busy season of appearances and ceremonies in the name of aloha ... St. John Vianney School likes Hawaii rainbows just like everyone else, but it can only take so much. A back-to-school bulletin reminded keiki that their hair “must be returned to its natural color” by July 31 ... If it’s not too late, you can still catch Kaneohe playwright Y York (she says her sister named her that) in HPR’s Aloha Shorts at 7 p.m. Aug. 14. Works by Kailua artists Andrew Byron, Jojo Chapman, Tamara Armstrong, Taylor Cooke and Paul Bye are up for bid with others tonight (Aug. 16) at Compadres. The event is “Young Artists Helping Young Artists,” a benefit for Rehab hospital’s Louis Vuitton Creative Arts Program (375-9120). Windward’s own Brother Noland entertains ... Alissa Arp is the new vice president for research and dean of the College of Natural Sciences at HPU. The Lanikai woman has done some “deep” research herself - about one-and-a-half miles worth in those submersibles. She has a Ph.D. in biology and is recognized internationally for her expertise in the physiology of life in challenging environments. That’s Hawaii ... An expert in tales of Tonga, Waiahole’s Emil Wolfgramm will be featured on HPR’s Talk Story Radio show at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29, telling stories of the Tongan Maui ... Kahaluu attorney Ellen Godbey Carson is one of five lawyers in the country to receive the 2006 Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award, which honors professional excellence in specialty fields. Ellen has championed anti-discrimination issues and rights of inmates, among other causes. She received the honor Aug. 6 during the ABA convention in Waikiki ... Rehearsals are mounting up for Army Community Theatre’s Sweeney Todd. In fact all three of Kaneohe’s singing Mounts - John, Lorna and Megan - are in the play, which opens Sept. 7 ...
