Leave it to the Lions to find the hardest jobs and fill them (as well as their stomachs maybe?). We can all be proud of Pali Lions Club members and relatives, led by Stan, Karen and Kelcie Emoto of Kailua, who helped prepare and serve the city of Honolulu’s 100th anniversary birthday cake on July 2 at City Hall ... With cake, you usually have ice cream. But according to Fire Capt. Kennison Tejada, a Castle High graduate, the Kaneohe Fire Station gang may have had trouble moving their frozen treasure while their building was being tented for termites earlier this month. “It was one of those humbug things,” he said. “They had to move all the food out, but (the perishables) they buy fresh every day.”

The crews bunked at Kokokahi YMCA instead of the district park, the original plan, since it was less disruptive ... The West Honolulu Rotary Club should add Windward to its name: the club’s past three presidents have local ties: Incoming president Pat Tsuji of Kaneohe, outgoing president John Sutton of Kailua, and 2004 president Roland Chun, who heads the Kaneohe Business Group ... More definitely Windward officers for 2006 are Kahaluu Neighborhood Board chairman George Okuda, vice chair Amy Luersen, treasurer Daniel Bender and secretary Moana Lee ... Among the paid kind of officers is Island Insurance Co.‘s Sharon Lee, now vice president of administrative services.

A Kaneohe resident, Sharon’s been in the business for three decades and is a UH-Manoa graduate ... The good deeds of Kaneohe’s Lynn Murata have been noticed by her alma mater, Mid-Pacific Institute. Lynn was named 2006 Alumna of the Year recently for her contributions to the Keiki Palaka Band (with husband Mel) and the ohana of Enchanted Lake Elementary School, where she’s made the cafeteria the heart of the campus and its the biggest supporter. “An elementary schoolteacher turned food services manager,” MidPac stated, “she gives selflessly of her time and talents to children of all ages” ... Having a busy summer is Donald Duncan of Waimanalo (Damien ‘98, Windward Community College). Donald completed both his Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, and a computer science course at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss. ...

Kailua artist Carl Pao, partner in Kailua’s Lodestar gallery, is also part of Hot August Nights, a sort of “visual poetics” display set for Chinatown’s First Friday (5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4) and all of August at Mark’s Garage (521-2903). Grab your dictionary and read what the venue’s creative director, Rich Richardson, says about Carl’s work: “(Carl) has unearthed some fun and irreverent faux archeological vignettes that ‘take a dig’ at the hegemonic interpretations of Hawaiian culture” ... Windward actors Tom Holowach and Becky Maltby are in The Actors Group play Sylvia, on stage now through Aug. 13 at the Yellow Brick Studio in Honolulu (550-8457). Tom plays a man (easy) and Becky plays a dog (not so easy). In a now-familiar scenario, the ever-handy Tom explains: “The male lead had to drop out for medical reasons, so the show producers called me up, and I jumped in to play the part” ...

Windward’s Kupa’aina plays two gigs for the cause on Sunday: 10:30 a.m. at Thomas Square to commemorate the day British Admiral Richard Thomas restored the nation of Hawaii (and its flag to the flagpole) in 1843, and at 3 p.m. at the Kakaako Waterfront Park hoolaulea, to celebrate the community’s successful campaign against overdevelopment. Phew! What kind of music goes with all those things? ... Kaneohe’s Julia Flynn made the spring honor roll at Oregon State, where she’s into exercise and sport science
