Geographer Justin Pummell’s Yap Map took first place (among 3,500 entries) at an international conference. The Kaneohe specialist’s computerized map was created to help responders to a 2004 typhoon that nearly levelled the island of Yap. Despite its ho-hum title - Federated States of Micronesia Flush Toilet Availability - it was vital to the rescue effort. His work also helped American Samoa after Typhoon Olaf and Indonesia’s road-building efforts after the December 2004 tsunami. Justin, 26, is on the Army Corps of Engineers’ Honolulu Engineering District team ... The Corps named an HED colleague of Justin’s, Roxane Iseri of Kahaluu, its employee of the month in December.
Roxane is a program analyst ... If it’s not one opera, it’s another. Hawaii Opera Theatre’s next show, Il Trittico, is this weekend already featuring more Windward performers: Kate Sarff of Kailua, and from Kaneohe Louise South, Susan Cromer, Patrick McNichols and the ubiquitous thundering voice of John Mount (596-7858)
Si Khia
... Si Khia is in Kaneohe doing an 18-month chaplain residency at the Hawaii State Hospital. His ultimate goal is to return to his native Myanmar (Burma) to develop the same kind of clinical pastoral training there in seminaries and psychiatric hospitals ... Kirsten Esibill is happy to report that people still love craft fairs. The Lanikai fair that she chairs each year earned $8,900 in December, including $1,337 from the bake sale alone (people still like to eat, too). And all of it goes to the park maintenance fund ... Consider a piggy bank for ribs, too. Most barbecue fans have slurped up Debra Hopkins’ ribs and soul food in Kailua, and sales are going well for her bottled sauce at island big-boxes.
Now Kaneohe Marine base customers can pick up Deb’s Ribs - hot or cold - at the Marine Mart, along with most of her Kailua menu ... UH-Manoa student filmmaker Tiare Nichols, who honed her talent while at Kalaheo High School, will switch skills at 8 p.m. Feb. 28 and perform as a featured poet during the monthly poetry series at Mark’s Garage (753-4661). Tiare recently completed an indigenous documentary about a Waimanalo musician, which is set for the film festival circuit. “A lyrical poet from Kailua” named Warren Piece (a play on words, perhaps?) performed last month at Mark’s ...
Katherine Ernst
Katherine Ernst (Kalaheo ‘98, Windward Community College ‘05) has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB in Texas ... Just as King Intermediate art teacher Jean Noguchi had her students’ work on display recently in Japan, Bernice Poole‘s students - Enchanted Lake first-graders - set up their termite projects in the science department at UHManoa ... Windward resident Doug Scheer is a pompous army officer and Katie Beth Hicks is his timid teenage wife - in A Little Night Music, that is. The Tony award-wining Stephen Sondheim musical opens tonight (Feb. 22) at Manoa Valley Theatre, and also features Kailua’s Melissa Dylan on stage and Kaneohe set designer Karen Archibald (988-6131) ... Chantel Garrett of Kaneohe is a Distinguished Finalist for the 2006 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. This means she has been honored with a bronze medallion for her leadership of Iolani classmates in projects helping the elderly, young students, domestic violence victims, tsunami survivors, India orphans and families of deployed soldiers ... Enchanted Lake’s Kevin Sypniewski, founder of Assistguide.com a few years ago, says he now reaches more than 400 clients in 25 states, advising them about online tools for their long-term care services. Among his newest clients are the Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona‘s Office on Aging, Outrigger Hotels, and the elderly affairs offices of both the Louisiana and South Carolina governors ... Heeia State Park got a now-familiar jolt last week when the cast and crew from Lost descended on peaceful Kealohi Point to do some filming
