Del.icio.usEnjoying dinner at Haleiwa Joe’s (Haiku) recently were Jacksonville Jaguars scout Marty Miller and his wife Kerinda, in town for work at the Hula Bowl. It’s the couple’s second trip from Florida in four months. Last time it was for a family wedding at Kualoa Ranch. Jaguars’ guard and Kahuku graduate Chris Naeole pointed out to Marty that his dad, Simeon, is a longtime ranch hand there ... Vaimana Conner, who was student body president at both Kailua High and UH-Manoa, has added wings to his diplomas. Vaimana has been commissioned an Air Force 2nd Lt. and was picked to train as a F-15C fighter jet pilot for NATO.

He’ll be doing his homework high above Tyndall AFB, Fla., in the 55-week program ... Darryl Takushi (Kahuku ‘02) heads for the historic New York Athletic Club Feb. 7-9 to join the 10th class of the American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Minority Students Program. Darryl, a senior advertising major at HPU, gets to meet with the nation’s top advertising executives, including event chair Frank Cooper, marketing vp for Pepsi ... Congratulations to Windward residents who agreed to “go to jail” for Muscular Dystrophy. A planned Lock Up in November at Kailua’s Big City Diner (which meant good grinds for the jailbirds) raised more than $24,000 for MDA’s summer program at Camp Erdman ... Chelsea Wirth of Kailua made the fall semester dean’s list at Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio ...
Kailua actress Genny Wilson is making her Hawaii debut in the role of Caroline Bramble in Diamond Head Theatre’s Enchanted April opening this Friday (733-0274). It’s an old-fashioned tale of British women who share a life-changing adventure at an Italian villa ... Doing well in front of the camera lens is CPAC alumna Christina Tollichi Souza, currently playing Dayumae in the film End of the Spear. Her former teacher Ron Bright caught the show in town recently and reports he’s “extremely proud” of her. Christina got her start in Grease and Oklahoma on the Castle High stage. She also pops up in TV episodes of Boston Legal, Navy NCIS, The Bold and the Beautiful, CSI: Miami, etc. ... Congratulations to Lindsey Mau. Judges chose the Kaneohe girl as first princess on the 2006 Narcissus Court (which includes a VIP trip to China during the Year of the Dog) ... The Castle High administrative staff has moved back into the main office: old building, new roof ... Too bad we missed it. Forty-two King Intermediate art students had their works on display Jan.
16-22 at the Daimaru Central Gallery in Sapporo, Japan ... David Luiyuen of Waimanalo and Alison Uyeshiro of Kailua have both joined the Army Reserve’s delayed-training program and will report to basic training on the mainland this summer. Kailua’s Eugene Graham has joined the U.S. Army through the same program ... Meanwhile, Amanda Gomez of Kaneohe has already completed her basic training with the U.S. Air Force at Lackland AFB ... Ka’ohu Cazinha, who teaches hula at Kapunahala, was able to bring in the late Moe Keale‘s nephew, Walt, to teach ukulele after school.

Classes begin next Monday (see calendar) and Ka’ohu will be there too: “I will take the last hour of the course myself because he’s such a good teacher,” she declares ... Enchanted Lake residents can now stay awake all day. Starbucks (the fourth in Windward Oahu) has opened at the local shopping center next to Ben Franklin, and manager Eva Herbert and her staff stand ready to pour (263-3061) ... There’s a lot of sweet munching going on in Kailua, following St. John Vianney’s Big Island Candy sale. Students Tyler and Jorden Prussing, Wailani Morris, Kalei Cruz, Edward Chun Fat, and Matthew and Lindsey Lee amassed a total of $2,465 in sales. And that’s just the top sellers ... Kaneohe graphic design major Deanna Kaneshiro made the fall dean’s list at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
