The Hawaii Academy of Science will present Lee Goff, Chaminade’s resident CSI professor, with the 2005 Distinguished Science Educator award Thursday for his achievements as forensic educator and scientist. The Kaneohe bug sleuth and consultant on hundreds of homicide cases worldwide is also curator of Crime Scene Insects, a traveling exhibit currently on the East Coast. It buzzes into the Virginia Maritime Science Museum this fall ... Jennifer Whitlock of Kaneohe has earned her master’s degree from Central Michigan University ... JoDee Hunt of Lanikai joins down-town’s First Friday for the third month in a row with “One Night Stand,” an exhibit in the Mendoca building’s “hidden” courtyard from 5 to 9 p.m. this Friday featuring Windward artists Dennis Wilson, Susanne Ball, Arthur Nelander and Karen Kiefer, among others. “We have an L-shaped wall,” JoDee says, “and we just zip the paintings in wherever they fit” ... Toni Martin, Windward Community College assistant professor of art, coordinates the Mendonca shows for JoDee. Toni is also one of 12 professors in the UH system chosen to receive the 2005 Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching ... Army Reserve Pvt. Jeffrey Mussell of Kaneohe has completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. ... Meanwhile, Army Sgt. Matthew Dougherty (Kailua ‘95) has deployed to the U.S. Navy’s Guantanamo Bay detention camps operated by Joint Task Force GITMO. Matthew is a supervisor in the 525th Military Police Battalion ... Rochelle Uchibori gets paid to be the Honolulu Theatre for Youth house manager. The Kailua theater buff is not working for free, as stated here Aug. 17. Congratulations for that. HTY’s opening play Friday at Tenney Theater, by the way, is Nothing Is the Same - the funny, poignant work by Y York, directed by her husband Mark Lutwak (both are new Kaneohe residents), with a song by Kupa’aina’s Kevin Chang (Castle ‘90). Mark says the production (about Wahiawa children who witness the Pearl Harbor attack) is also booked for Seattle this fall where many shows are already sold out ... Hawaii’s National Guard troops in Baghdad don’t have to use Uncle Ben’s rice after all. Vinnie Gonzales (Castle ‘96) reports that local folks got wind of the problem and started sending good old Hinode short-grain for the citizen soldiers’Spam musubis. “They sell Spam at the PX,” he adds, “but only the Hawaii guys buy it so we don’t have to really worry about them running out” ... If you missed the Squirrel Hunters at Morning Brew last Friday, you can catch them for the second year at KEY Project’s Koolau Ohana Festival, coming up Oct. 22. The Kailua-based band is a fixture in the local bluegrass scene. Head squirrel, ah, lead singer is Kilin Reece of Kailua ... Psychologist Sherry Henry invites all parents to an open house from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday (Aug. 29) at her Oliver Windward Asperger Autistic Youth Academy in Kailua. Sean Lennon of Kailua received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal this month for heroism during the Cobra Gold exercise in May in Thailand. The Marine Petty Officer 2C is an experienced medical corpsman who helped save two lives - an injured heavy equipment operator and Marine with breathing problems from a head wound. Sean was also the Marine Division’s Senior Sailor of the Quarter in the spring ... Actor Alan Sutterfield, now heading the Community Media Center at WCC, is amazed that his Kaneohe hometown now has four community theaters. (If you can’t name them, call me.) He recalls a more primitive time when acting in Ron Bright‘s original production of South Pacific meant emoting inside the old Castle gymnasium ... Kaneohe Marines and Sailors heard thank-yous from USO entertainers like comedians Colin Quinn and Jeffrey Ross, model and sports reporter Leeann Tweeden, and retired NFL halfback Gale Sayers, who all stopped by the base Aug. 22. Not only are they role models and heroes, the entertainers told the troops, but they are the best audience ever
