A new comedy about disabled athletes, The Ringer, has gotten the official thumbs-up from Special Olympics, and Hawaii SO executive director Nancy Bottelo of Ahuimanu, is recommending it to everyone ... No laughing matter is the paving repair that Frank Coluccio Bros. has undertaken for St. Anthony’s Church and School. According to the parish’s project administrator, Elaine Hogue, the work is worth more than $100,000 to the church ... Hunting for the Squirrel Hunters shouldn’t be too hard this month. Try downtown Honolulu. The bluegrass/celtic/folk group is playing on First Friday (Jan. 6) at the Red Elephant Coffeehouse on Bethel Street; then hunters Kilin Reece of Kailua and Lesley Kline will be jamming Jan. 15 at O’Toole’s on Nuuanu Ave.

Shantel L. Morales (Redemption Academy ‘05) and Dylan Boeman (Kalaheo ‘05) have graduated from basic Air Force training at Lackland AFB, Texas ... I came across a New York magazine at Kaneohe Library, dated Jan. 15, 2001. In it were descriptions of three recommended dining spots in the World Trade Center. The Greatest Bar on Earth, it reads, “has become a popular meeting spot for downtown office workers” and the view can’t be beat. “Don’t wait for a special occasion to take the 107-flight elevator ride” to Wild Blue, the reviewer adds. And the great food at Windows of the World (where Honolulu pastry chef Heather Ho perished) “manages to steal some attention away from the main attraction: that spectacular view of Manhattan Island” ... Stanley Fuji of Waimanalo won $25,000 at the Fremont casino recently, but Harold Olinger of Kailua wasn’t far behind with $10,000 on slots at the California Hotel. Other downtown Las Vegas winnahs: Kaneohe’s Evangeline Kaauwai, $9,240; Waimanalo’s Stephanie Bowes, $7,525; Kailua’s Jeremiah Pahukula, $5,000; and Kaneohe’s Alice Tanaka, $4,700 ... Connor Norris won the grand prize from the Kaneohe Lions for the club’s “Peace Without Borders” poster contest at King Intermediate School.

Ed Case‘s competitive nominees to the U.S. Air Force and Naval academies, Kaneohe’s Benny Tran is a Case pick for competitive nominee to West Point ... People must go nuts in December in the Naish household. Kailua’s Carol Naish, who still performs in Ballet Hawaii’s Nutcracker each year, says her grandchildren were in the Alameda Civic Ballet’s version of the same holiday production ... When I boarded a return flight from L.A. recently, I reached my assigned seat just as another Carol Chang prepared to settle into the same one. I know her nephew, in fact. (Wes Nakama used to work for MidWeek). A flight attendant (who was once a Chang) quickly untangled the situation, and we both flew home sitting down in separate places. But I still wonder, did she order chicken or pasta? ... Gourmet cooking tip from Iraq: Use your space heater to make saimin. According to our Baghdad food correspondent, Vinnie Gonzales of Kaneohe, the Hawaii Army National Guardsmen stay warm in their perimeter towers with gasoline-feed space heaters. “But they’re so hot we can use them to cook on,” he writes. “We just use the metal canteen cup that the Army issued us and - voila! - instant saimin for the cold morning”
