Maunawili’s Vanita Rae Smith, best known for directing and promoting Army Community Theatre productions, is retiring after 40 years in local and national theater. She accepted a lifetime achievement award this month for her outstanding support of the U.S. Army Entertainment Program - collecting it personally in Heidelberg, Germany. Colleagues here will honor her May 24 with a party at Koolau Ballrooms (623-2394) ...
The Sony Technology Award (a new laptop computer) went to Rebecca Fonoimoana (Kahuku 2007) and four other UH undergraduates May 6 “for significant service to the community.” Rebecca plans a career in conservation and education, and her new Vaio is a great tool to help her get there ... Meat-eater Jasmin Rodriguez can’t say enough about The Bistro, the vegetarian cafeteria at Castle Medical Center, the going-green hospital where she works. “I now have a true appreciation of good, meatless food,” she admits, noting that the cafe has invited its farm vendors in from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today (May 12) to honor them for supplying great local produce.
“They also have the best acai bowls and poi smoothies,” she says. About a year ago, it dropped the name Pali Gardens “because there’s no gardens.” But garden is definitely on the menu, thanks to nutrition services director Ruby Hayasaka ...

Speaking of meat, Kualoa Ranch president John Morgan says they serve his home-grown, grass-fed Kualoa beef right there at the ranch snack shop ... Kailua kayaking brothers Ryan, 20, and Patrick Dolan, 21, cruised through the U.S. national team trials last month with impressive races, qualifying for three European World Cup competitions. Mother’s Day weekend in Vichy, France.) It’s bringing them closer to their 2012 Olympics goal. The men grew up paddling with Lanikai Canoe Club. Also doing well at the trials in San Diego were Kailua’s Brandon Woods, 25, and junior team entries Tati Perrin of Kailua and Rachel Kincaid of Kaneohe ...
Last week’s column told of 10 new artist studio lifts in the Mendonca building. Oh, for an “o”! They’re actually lofts. Sorry, JoDee ... ‘Oiwi Film Festival premieres Maunalua, a 12-minute, 1959 film about Kuapa fishpond, pre-Hawaii Kai, that’s directed by retired Kaneohe geographer Lehman “Bud” Henry. Doris Duke Theatre will screen it with others at 1, 4 and 7:30 p.m. May 18-20 (532-8701)
