Ten hand-crafted, left-handed guitars make their debut in GuitART! Functional Artwork By Dale Machado April 16-May 14 at Peggy Chun Gallery on Nuuanu Ave. (545-4810), and Dale, a Kaneohe musician/radio engineer, plans a rollicking opening reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday with Kailua vocalist Melody Heidel (together, they’re Two Shades of Blue) ... Matthew Sakumoto of Kaneohe made the fall dean’s list at Washington University in St. Louis. He’s studying engineering and applied science ...
Winners of Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center’s Easter coloring contest are Pualii Zidek of Kaneohe Elementary, Brandon Lum of St. Ann’s School, and Austin Guthrie of Kamehameha Schools ... Back in the 1920s and ‘30s, the first generation of Teruyas began truck farming in Kailua. It grew gradually into Armstrong Produce, the largest wholesale produce company in the state. Just last year CEO Mark Teruya saw his family company donate 151,437 pounds of produce to Hawaii Foodbank’s Ohana Produce Program. Surely we can drop off a few cans of Spam and tuna to go with it this Saturday at Windward City Shopping Center (see calendar) ...
Olive Boutique’s Ali McMahon calls the shop’s recent Haiti drive “overwhelming.” The boutique collected 130 pounds of supplies from Kailua customers and residents for a Haitian school in Port-au-Prince ...Richard Kato, a social worker who led KEY Project for many years, died March 28 of cancer at age 72. Despite his illness, he continued to support it after retirement and returned to KEY in November to help with the annual Thanksgiving kalua turkey roast. We’ll miss you, Richard. (Funeral is 6 p.m. April 12 at Harris United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Nakata, also a former KEY executive director, presiding at the service) ...
The Hawaii Supreme Court has reinstated former state Windward Sen. Melodie Aduja to practice law after a three-year suspension ... Kalaheo High School has elected Kainoa Makua as student body president for next year ... By the way, the Mustangs’ robotics team made a respectable showing - placing 7th out of 42 entries - at the National Vex Robotics Competition last month in Omaha, with support from physics and chemistry teacher Nicole Akana, parents and area residents who made the trip with them ...
As with most small nonprofits, the needs now are greater than ever and the help is slimmer. Board member Susan Friedl says that Windward Boys & Girls Clubhouse could sure use a hand in its grant-writing. If you have the golden words to do it, call Maureen Purington at 263-0555 ... Furlough frustration isn’t just for kids. Take longtime instructor Marie Riley, for example, who teaches health and fitness classes at WCC. The Kailua acupressure expert says she’s dropped all her Friday classes for seniors because they have to stay home and supervise their school-age grandchildren.
Now she promotes discounts for early signups, etc. (Acupressure starts April 28; call 235-7433). And JoAn Boggs can barely keep up the schedule for volunteers manning the popular Friends of Kaneohe Library book sale. She slides in open hours between DOE furlough Fridays and library furlough Wednesdays. (For sale hours, see the library Web site)
