Look out, world leaders of today, tomorrow’s pacesetters are closing in fast. Among the 26 youth leaders from the U.S. attending the United Nations Climate Change Negotiations in Denmark next week is Maggie Comstock of Kailua. She’s a pure green delegate with plenty of credentials for her 21 years. As a member of SustainUS Agents of Change and co-founder of the Green Club at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., Maggie’s ready to help make policy for a global climate treaty.
“It’s ultimately my generation who will be dealing with the decisions, or indecisions, of our leaders in Copenhagen,” she says, “so it is important for youth voices to be heard at the conference.”
Also expected to attend is Maggie’s fellow Punahou alum, a guy named Barry Obama ... Speaking of youths, if there are any Windward high school students actually reading this column - what do you think you’re doing!? You only have two more days to apply for an internship with state Sen. Jill Tokuda (587-7215) ...

There is hope for folks who flunk English in grade school, according to children’s book author Graham Salisbury. The nationally acclaimed author returned recently to his former school, Kailua Elementary (where language arts was not his best subject), to discuss his own childhood and his newly released title in the Calvin Coconut series ... Elsie Fong, a Kaneohe resident and member of the Pali Seniors Club (see page 18 photos), was honored recently by RSVP for her volunteer work at local schools, nursing homes and for her willingness to be a leader. She pitches in wherever she’s needed, supporters say ...
Todd Iacovelli of Kailua took second place for his division in the Saucony Val Nolasco Half-marathon Nov. 8, when runners took off from Kapiolani park, up and around Diamond Head, through Kahala, out to Aina Haina and back for a total distance of 13.1 miles ...
