Earning his first general’s star is Joseph Caravalho Jr., who grew up in Kaneohe and went on to become a career military surgeon. Brig. Gen. Joe is the top medical officer with the multinational forces in Iraq, as well as being an Army Ranger, Special Forces soldier and reportedly the cardiologist to Gen.
David Petraeus. His promotion ceremony took place last month at Al-Faw Palace on Camp Victory, Baghdad. (It’s surrounded by a well-stocked lake that Saddam Hussein apparently used for duck hunting.) Of his parents, Agnes and Joe Sr., who still live in Kaneohe, he says: “They sacrificed an awful lot to prepare us for school and a life of service, so I’m happy to make my mom and dad proud” ...
Another dedicated federal employee is Kaneohe resident Carol Shimada, who has been working at Kaneohe Marine base since 1942 and has no plans to retire. Currently a civilian payroll supervisor, she even showed up on Sept. 11, 2001. As her co-worker Priscilla Oku told the Hawaii Marine, “She told the guards, ‘I’m an essential employee, and we need to make sure civilians receive their paychecks” ...

Castle’s Polynesian music teacher Dawn Cone operates with a budget on a string - literally. She welcomes donated ukuleles, guitars, keyboards, pianos, drums, cases, music books and stands, amplifiers, etc. “It would touch your heart to see the students learning to play music on these donated instruments,” she says. Cindy is a sales associate with RE/MAX 808 Realty, leads water exercise classes at Kailua District Park (see calendar) and is on the board of Windward United Church of Christ ... Kaneohe’s former Miss Hawaii Ligaya Stice has married Patrick Perin in Colorado. Among the attendees was her sister Jade, who also has a new role to play - as Ellen in Paliku Theatre’s upcoming Miss Saigon. Ligaya and Patrick will settle in Hawaii, since she’s a resident physician at Kapiolani Medical Center ...
Hurray for Kaneohe’s own Bryan Clay, dazzling them all with his golden performance in the Olympic decathlon ...
