Before anyone could stage a tree-planting ceremony April 22 at Kainalu Elementary, many hands worked behind the scenes. A local soccer team and 24 volunteers from the Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron prepared the grounds and/or hauled in $4,000 worth of native seedlings for the grand Earth Day planting. Marine John Trumata (a Kainalu alumnus) said the hardest part was the manual labor: “It’s tough work,” he told the Hawaii Marine, “because you’re trying to soften up the settled soil or uproot plants that get transported somewhere else” ...
