Kalaheo student Emily Valdez helped drafted a bill (SB2774) that’s before two state Senate committees this week at the Legislature. Her original resolution, written for the Secondary Student Conference, was picked from hundreds to be heard by the big guys. HPU has tapped Kailua’s Kala’i Stern to be its choral music director. His resume shouts out “experience”: He directed the college’s vocal ensemble on its Mozart festival tour of Austria; he directs music at First United Methodist Church and assists in Kamehameha Schools’performing arts department. He has a BA in music from UH-Manoa where he helped conduct the university chorus, concert choir and chamber singers.
He directed the Honolulu Boy Choir, the Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club choir and was musical theater director for ‘Ohia Productions, HTY, Saint Louis School and Kapolei Performing Arts Center. PLUS: Remember ‘Ale’a and its Na Hoku awards? Kala’i also won the Frank B. Shaner falsetto contest and many other music honors. The next trip for the HPU orchestra and vocal ensemble is China. Phew!
