A Time To Share With Friends

Del.icio.usBeware: Friends come and go while enemies accumulate. That was the advice a good friend gave to me a long time ago.
The probable truth is most people have more casual acquaintances than real friends. The reason is simple. Friends have to be nurtured over a period of time. Friends are not made instantly.
In a way, it’s a magical process. Few people can remember when an acquaintance became a good friend. Something just happens and a person makes the transition. The real trick is to hang on to good friends and don’t worry so much about making new ones. They will come with little prodding. Hanging on to old friends takes time and effort.
That’s what is so special about the holiday season. It’s the perfect time and setting to remember old friends and new friends with a card or phone call. Even an e-mail will do the trick in this day and age.
It’s a sweet thing when an acquaintance goes from one stage in a relationship to the next level. It is a moment worth remembering.
Enemies, on the other hand, are a little more complex. Some people hate others because of the way they speak or look. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to dislike someone you have never met, but people do. The holiday season is for these people to wake up and smell the mistletoe.
Conventional wisdom on the subject says if someone hates you, treat them with kindness. Beyond that, stay away from them at all costs. Forget their names and cross the street when you see them approaching. The main thing is not to worry about their hate. If they want to hate things and people, let them do it on their own time.
The holiday season is for remembering friends, not enemies and acquaintances. There is always the new year for that.
