The night of the multi-course wine dinner might be drawing to a close. Not that wine will ever go out of fashion, but there are new trends with food and wine pairings taking place the world over.
Honolulu is no exception. Check out some of the latest signature drinks at local restaurants and you might be surprised how well they pair with food. With an explosion of interest in cocktails and food, and the well-deserved recognition of a group of highly talented local bartenders, there’s as much ado about applewood-smoked martinis and orange-spiced vanilla bean rums as there is about the 2007 Pinot Noirs from California.
Hot on the foodie to-do list is Munch, a monthly cocktail pairing hosted at trendy Apartment 3, home of the gourmet comfort food of chef Robert McGee and the gorgeous cocktails of Kyle Reutner. The monthly Munch features a cocktail theme with three-course pairings. Expect sellouts and check the website apartmentthree.com for reservation details ...
Speaking of the 2007 Pinots, there’s a vertical tasting of some of the most-talked-about examples of this vintage taking place this Saturday at Hawaii Prince Hotel.
The exclusive tasting begins at 4:30 p.m. and will feature 12 wineries, including Drew, Au Bon Climat and Brewer Clifton. It’s a benefit for Lupus Foundation of Hawaii and traditionally features some outstanding wines. Don’t miss it if you want to learn why wine experts the world over are declaring 2007 a banner year. Chefs at the graze-and-guzzle party include Hiroshi Fukui, D.K. Kodama, Keith Endo, Ron De Guzman, and Tushar and Anna Dubey of Hokulani Bake Shop. Nothing goes better with a world-class cupcake than a world-class glass of Pinot Noir. Details at Lupushawaii.org ...
While exclusive dinners and cutting-edge cuisine are fun, sometimes it’s just as exciting to discover the best deal in town. Eating at a fine-dining restaurant and enjoying a reduced-price check certainly can increase an already pleasurable experience. At Wolfgang’s Steakhouse this month, there’s a great lunchtime offer that showcases the best of the restaurant, along with a selection of specially priced lunch deals.
“There was an incredible response to our lunch special when we featured our hamburger,” says Wolfgang’s GM Bill Nickerson, “so we wanted to offer more specials. It’s a great way for people to enjoy a fine-dining restaurant at a fraction of the price.”
Nickerson believes that Wolfgang’s should showcase what it does best, so you’ll find a chopped salad, fresh mahimahi and fries on the new menu alongside the famous Wolf burger. The lunchtime entrees come with fries and onion rings and cost just $12.95.
Remember Wolfgang’s next time you’re looking for somewhere special to meet for lunch. I’m sure you’ll be impressed with both the service and your check.
Happy eating!
