Howzit surfers and beachgoers?!

So ends another record week in surfer’s paradise, and we’ve got a lot to show for it. The results are in from not just one … but two (2) “first-ever” events! The first is the North shore Tow-In Surfing Championships that finished Tuesday, March 8. There were 12 tow teams (you cannot do this stuff alone!) that braved the 15- to 20-footers at a spot named “Avalanche.” This break is about 400 yards outside on the left of Haleiwa harbor; the wave breaks “left” from the surfers’ perspective toward the channel and is very thick and heavy. Thank God no one got hurt … just scared, but hey, as the “King of Tow” Laird Hamilton once said, “fear is why I do it!” We had a dozen adrenaline junkies going for fear and fame. In the end, it was a mix of luck and skill from both the Jet Ski and surfboard riders. Coming out on top were Eric Fisher and Matt Luzano beating out second place finishers Da Brothers Kamasugi, Todd and Cully … Interesting side note: Eric Fisher is from Florida … It’s whoever catches the biggest and best waves.

The second event was awesome, too! The T&C Surf Women’s Pipeline Championship can really say women rule … they rule their surfing destiny with courage and skill. Men are not the only ones who can “bust down the door” or get seriously barreled at the Pipe! You’ll see proof in video and pictures. They deserved a chance to give it a go together … bodyboarders, short- and longboarders … and they did it … safely, soundly … finishing Saturday … Here are the results: Winning the stand-up shortboard division was 15 year old talent from Kauai, Alana Blanchard … Longboarding victory went to California’s Kim Hamrock … And our first place bodyboarder is Australian champ Kira Llewllyn! Big kudos to T&C Surf, Nextel, First Hawaiian Bank, Sea-Ductive and Surf n’ Sea … What would our athletes do without your support? Thank you.

Last wave … what will surf look like the remainder of the month? The trend will not match up to the first three weeks of “Monster March” … We won’t likely see this huge size in March again for over a decade! As of this writing, (Monday) we will have moderate surf over the weekend for the North and West shores … South Shore can get a little more active during spring, as we saw last week, and a lot more active as summer approaches … Call 596-WAVE or log onto surfnewsnetwork.com to verify the specifics!
