Big waves on the South Shore have been few and
far between in May
On this Monday post Moms’ Day I write the bad news…no perennial Moms’ Day south swell for 2005. Sunday swells were three feet max, allowing Mom the complete and full attention she deserves! And hey, that’s a good thing, ’cause if it weren’t for mothers how many waves would we catch? We all really do owe it all to them! Thanx, Mom … Love You!
We love surfing, too … So let’s do it! The period through mid-May will be mediocre as far as real size goes on all shores — four feet max if and when the waves come. So get all that work, studying and chores done now, for this break in the action only means that the Bigger Waves are getting closer. Hey, guess who’s turning 30 years old next year? Beside Surf News Network? Give up? Da Hui! Yep, the Hui O He‘e Nalu (“Group of Wave Riders”) is presumably the state’s oldest surviving and thriving surfing club! Founder “Fast Eddie” Rothman started his Surf club when Team Rider and six-time Vans Triple Crown champ Sunny Garcia was about 3! Now that’s saying a lot for core longevity! The Da Hui Team is going bigger than ever and plans to celebrate — and what better place than Pipeline Café on Sunday, May 29 from 5-10 p.m.? Troy Fernandez ( Ka‘u Krater Boys) will show why he’s still No. 1 on that ukulele…and tons more entertainment from Ka‘ala Boys and Koa ‘Uka! Sunny Garcia and tons of other pros will party on too… I’ll be your MC… And Da Hui’s first ever female board of director, Mahina Chilling-worth, will be hanging loose with hundreds of us surfers who appreciate “upholding ocean awareness and protecting our island beaches” … Happy B-day Hui O’ He’e Nalu! Next Wave: It’s just over two months to go to before the third biennial Quiksilver-Edition Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction! Vans Triple Crown director Randy Rarick says a unique array of surf antiques has begun to surface for what promises to be the most comprehensive representation of surfing’s last 100 years! Classics will go under the hammer soon so those wishing to submit items to the auction only have until May 31.
Lack a big waves hasn’t deterred town surfers this spring
The auction will take place Saturday, July 23, at the Blaisdell Center’s Pikake Room. Doors swing open at 11 a.m. and the live auction gets underway at 5 p.m. While vintage surfboards usually draw the highest interest, Rarick is stoked by the quality and uniqueness of other collectibles that have emerged for this third auction.
“This will be our strongest surfboard collection for sure,” says Rarick. “We have uncovered personalized boards of name surfers from the various eras to offer a vintage collection ranging from early singlefins to industry-changing thrusters.”
