Aloha, surfers!

We’re marching along through 2007 and so is the monster surf!

By the time you read this, the 15th storm of the winter surf season will have hit. It’s a monster, indeed, creating surf near or at warning levels ... the only category that beats this is “Code Black.”

What a coincidence, the Monster Energy Pipeline Pro had to go face-to-face with this beast. I guess that’s why we call it Monster. Pipe at 6 feet is monstrous enough for most surfers - but 12 feet ... 15 feet? That’s Godzilla material. They’ll be surviving out there.

The forecast calls for a (much needed) rest from these “above advisory” levels next week. With trades and sunshine coming back - as well as safe surf - there will be plenty regular but hungry wave riders. Be sure to share and show your aloha.

Several events coming and going ... yes, surfers love to kick it up a notch.

Bam!

The Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic went off the hook last weekend in medium to BIG stuff. It was classic because it was Super Bowl Sunday and the waves were perfect, so what are you going to do? Surf and miss the biggest game of the year? No, you’re going to do something classic and live up to your name. They put up a big screen TV and watched it from the beach! So, in the end it was the Super Bowl vs. the Makaha Bowl. Who won? I’d say it was a tie ... though Colts fans might disagree. All in all, the vibe is, as always, beautiful.

Hey, the girls are getting hungry for some action at the 2007 Women’s Pipeline Pro presented by Heavy Water mag. The dates to mark are March 6-16. This oneday event continues to bust down the door for women’s sports. Pipe is known as the heaviest venue - for men. At one time (pre-‘60s) Pipe was thought to be unrideable - for men.

The mere idea of women riding this “freak of nature” did not exist.

But just like the 4-minute mile in 1954, there comes a point where humans break the mind and body barrier. Ever hear of Roger Bannister? The 25-year-old British med student became the first to ever do it. After his record, it was just a matter of time before many others did it, too. Australian John Landy bettered the Iffley Road record the following month with a time of 3 minutes 57.9 seconds, but Bannister will always be remembered as the man who ran the “miracle mile.” But first he had to break that mental “barrier” and claim the possibility for the human “race.”

I claim it for and with the girls - they are in the process of breaking mental and physical barriers with the Women’s Pipe Pro. This event gives them this chance! They’ll have their moments good and bad, but if you step back and look, it seems to me it’s all good. Someday, one woman is going to blow our minds wide open. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of it. Special mahalo to the U.S. Army for its support.
