The beat goes on for one of Hawaii’s most talented hip-hop dance crews. Hype 5-0 rocketed to international recognition in 2010 after it finished third on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Since ABDC, the crew which as a whole is called The Hype, consisting of 40 dancers who are all members of Hypersquad Dance Company located in Waipahu has not stopped creating and formulating new routines.
“After ABDC I didn’t want everyone to just know the members they saw on MTV, I felt it necessary for everyone to know all of our members,” says The Hype member and manager of Hypersquad Dance Company Josh Ulep, who was on the cover of MidWeek with brother Jason Ulep in February 2010.
After placing first in The World of Dance Tour in December 2010 at Blaisdell Arena, The Hype traveled to Los Angeles in April to test its skills against the best urban dancers on the West Coast. The outcome once again was a dominating first-place performance that also included the Crowd Favorite award as well as tallying the highest average score in The World Of Dance tour history.
“Everyone was so proud; I’ve never seen our crew more excited,” says Ulep. “We were the only team not from California, so for us to also take the crowd favorite was really amazing.”
When it comes to the formation of routines, Ulep says it is an overall group effort with ideas and contributions coming from each member. “We like to brainstorm all together. Ideas can stem from a song, theme or even a trick suggestion. At The World Of Dance Tour in L.A., we all had watched the movie Battle Los Angeles, and from that we created this robotic Terminator-type of theme,” he adds.
For dancers experienced or not, HyperSquad Dance Company welcomes new dancers to its studios. For more information, call 676HYPE. Hype 5-0 and The Hype will be performing at the Kababayan Fest Aug. 20 at Wet ‘N’ Wild Hawaii. -Chris Fleck
