Eleven-time Emmy award winner Pamela Young (pictured here with a girl in a Cambodian orphanage) has been providing Hawaii with its news for more than 25 years, 18 of which as the second half of KITV’s afternoon news broadcast duo with husband Gary Sprinkle. This year also marks the 27th year of Young’s Mixed Plate half-hour special, and she credits viewer responses for its continuous success.
“In the beginning it was a lot of local festivals and local culture, and then it was culinary stories, and then people wanted us to touch on travel. Mixed Plate really has evolved depending on the kind of feedback we have received,” says Young, who now anchors KITV’s weekend afternoon show.
Young has always tried to choose locations for Mixed Plate with regard to timeliness combined with significance to Hawaii.
“We’ve been doing part of it in Asia, especially China, because that has been special to Hawaii politics, business and tourism. Of course, when there is something happening such as the canonization of Father Damien, we traveled to Europe because he was Belgian and the canonization was in Rome. It is really about where the news is happening,” adds Young, who was featured with Sprinkle on MidWeek‘s cover Oct. 15, 2008.
Current breaking news about Young is her participation as board member of Sounding Joy Music Therapy Inc. A nonprofit organization that promotes and practices music therapy, Sounding Joy harnesses music’s therapeutic qualities to assist clients with behavioral, social, psychological, communicative, sensory-motor and/or cognitive functioning.
“I got involved because I could see all the wonderful work they do and because it is a grassroots organization. They have not received much attention or government funding. We’ve done the most basic fundraising because that is all we’ve been able to afford, and so the organization always has been close to my heart because of the work they do, the results they get even with the lack of support,” says Young, who has been chosen by the state as one of Hawaii’s Outstanding Advocates for Children & Youth.
In her honor, Sounding Joy Music Therapy Inc. will host A Morning Of Music champagne brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at Mission Houses Museum. Themed “Bubbly and Barefoot,” the brunch will offer a hat contest for those donning their most elegant and humorous chapeaus, as well as prestigious musical entertainment.
“I am flattered but feel a bit undeserving of this because it is the people inside, the therapists who deserve the credit,” Young adds. “This is going to be a lot of fun, though, and hopefully we’ll get more attention so people can understand that music heals.”
